Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have already upgraded the filter for the tank but am having issues with lighting which I need some advice on.
The light that comes with this tank (it was a beginners kind of package) is a Juwel Twin Lite PL-5. Its a 20w light that produces 6500 Kelvin. This should be enough to allow me to have low light plants in my tank such as Anubias or Java Ferns which is my goal at the moment.
The problem is the light has stopped working. It will come on for 10 mins say and then just turn off. I think it might have something to do with the condensation in the tank (even though they would be built with this in mind). Anyway I'm no electrician so will not be taking it apart. I have tried to source another of these lighting units online with no luck...I found a german website which has them but am a bit hesitant.
Here's the questions...
- Would anyone know what is wrong with my light and could it be fixed.
- If I can't fix it I have no problem buying a new one...anyone know where I could get one?
- If I can't do either I will need to put in another kind of lighting unit. Is it ok to drill holes in the top of my plastic Juwel hood and just screw in some generic lighting units? Or what would be the best alternative? I was thinking of maybe getting 2 clip on lights (Arcadia ones in Seahorse look good) and using some perspex to cover the tank? My gourami is a bit kamikaze and loves to jump and spit at me so definitely need some sort of cover.
Any ideas or advice would be great.
Cheers,
Ronan

I saw them, they look quite nice.
Would a sheet of perspex be ok to use as a lid do you reckon? I need something to stop the gourami committing suicide!

Dry it up and run it away from the tank and if it does the same it would lead me to believe it's not condensation maybe a dodgy transformer or a loose connection (blueram) a moderator on here is an electrician and has fixed lights for people in the past drop him a pm
I have the light unit drying out at the moment. Hopefully tomorrow it will work as it has completely stopped working now

I didnt think gourami's were jumpers? I have a Pearl Gourami and never seen him jumping. You could also check this link out.

My little guy jumps everytime I feed them. He's often made it through the door in the lid!!
Yes I also saw that new lid, it would fit no bother but I don't think the 15w lamp would be up for the job...
I think I'll look around the net to see if anyone has a perpex lid and just go with the clip on idea.
Thanks for you're help!

There's a 2 year warranty on Juwel lighting units. Do you have the tank longer than that?
Dave
Really?!
The tank is only about 5/6 months old.
I read the manual and it said that equipment such as the filter and lights are prone to daily wear and tear and cannot be included in the warranty. Maybe I read wrong.
I should email to confirm?
Thanks Dave
