Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Iv just replanted my Vision 180 and its looking better than ever! Problem is im only running the juwel filter in there, its worked fine for years! But aint handling all the extra plant crap the best, I don’t want to add another internal filter cause they take up to much room. So hopefully an external will do the trick!

1.How big an external would I need? Or is there any specific ones that people find better than others?

2. Is it possible to store the filter above the tank? The tank is built into my wardrobe and what little space I have left is used for cloths. As much as i wouldn’t mind sacrificing some jumpers nd trousers for the well being of the fish I think Ireland has a bit too cold a climate to get rid of them just yet!!...Anyways, there’s space in a press above the tank I could use if it was possible!...

Thanks

Alan!

Hi,

I have a Fluval 305 that does up to 300l and there's a 205 that does up to 200l. I can't complain about my 305 as it has worked well over the past 6 months and is very quiet. There are other makes out there such as Eheim and Tetra that are also highly rated.

You can't have the filter above the tank as they require gravity to draw the water down into the filter in the same way a syphon works.

Regards,

Ken.

Of course I will have to suggest the TetraTec EX700 coz I have one for the Rio 180 and the water has been crystal clear!! Absolutely no complaints, it works like a gem, you dont hear it working and the only way to know its functional is to touch it to feel the very slight vibration!!

They sell the TetraTec Ex700 (700L/hr) on Zooplus.ie at a price you will NOT beat from any store in Ireland.

For example the TetraTec Ex700 is generally retailing at 150 or 160 euro in all the shops I have been in..Zooplus is about 80 (and that includes delivery to anywere in Ireland!)

So effectively you can get the Ex1200 (1200L/hr) for about 130 euro from Zooplus.ie which is cheaper than the Ex700 in the shops!!

Hope that helps!! :)

Cheers guys!

Think ill be checking out the TetraTec filters!...

So it’s a no go on putting it above the tank!...what about beside it? (could maybe drill into the other wardrobe!..)…that work ok?....it would put the filter either at the same level as the tank or an inch or two lower.

Thanks for the help

Not sure how it would work beside it. As far as I know, externals are designed to operate under the level of the tank so there is an adequate flow of water back into the canister. You could always try one and see and then move it below the tank if you have problems.

I know when siphoning if the container you're siphoning from is above or at the same level as the container you're siphoning to, it won't work. The container you're siphoning from has to be at a higher level. The higher the the container your siphoning from, the strong the flow.

Ken.

Well just ordered a TetraTec EX1200...have to drill through to the other side now!...had a look there nd the self is nearly a foot below the bottom of the tank so should have no problem!

thanks for all the help!
