Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi, Quite new to proper fish keeping, have a 240 litre tank for about 2 years and at the weekend, the pump fluval 305 opened and about 120 litres of water poured onto my carpet!

It had been about 6 weeks since I had cleaned it and I wonder if it could burst open or how this could have happened? Now I have a 2 year old in the frame unless it is something that could be wrong with the pump that I need to replace. Can pressure build up and pop the clamps?

I am hesitant about blaming the toddler as he wouldnt have been near the tank that day so it would have been at least a day before, if he had done something?

I am afraid to turn the pump on again, do I trust it or replace it? has anyone had a similar problem with their pump?

The fish are doing well considering, I have lots of different barbs...clown, checkered, ruby, tiger, high fin, mollies.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

i would check the rubber seal inside the lid of the fluval these can perish over time causing leakage, this would be the most common fault with externals its worth replacing them every year, your local lfs should stock them, i'd stick it in a bucket and turn it on to see exactly where the leak is coming from this will give you an idea as to the fault

Dodgy seal could be to blame (but you check that by standing the filter in a basin and turning it on when attached to the tank).

If the output flow rate were closed off and the little start-siphon handle were pumped hard enough then that would also push water out of the seals (and may permanently damage them).

But maybe saving ones marriage is of top priority here. :)

So, to help prevent a major disaster in the future it has to be a compromise between wrecking the carpet and wrecking a filter that can be got for 130 euro !!

On the intake pipe of the filter, drill some holes in the intake pipe just below where the pipe goes into the water. If the filter leaks, then it will only take out so much water before the siphon action stops.
That may wreck the filter, but it will do less damage to the carpet and any partnerships.

For other advice on keeping fish and a partnership going, please contact the Agony Aunts here on the forum (I'm sure many have plenty of experience :D)

test it in a bucket first to see if its leaking from the seals, if it is check the seal is it cracked or twisted first, if taking it off and replacing it dosent fix the prob, replace the seal its simple
this aint the greatest video but it will show you how to do it

Can you explain what you mean by "opened"? If you actually mean opened it would mean one of the clips wasn't pressed home and the pressure popped the lid, if however, you mean "leaked" then it is possible you replaced the seal incorrectly or it got pinched or twisted or the very fine wall of plastic that the seal sits inside got squeezed or deformed.

There could even be fine grit on the rubber seals.

Rune the seal under luke warm water, and run it between finger and thumb. Then use a damp good qualty q-tip to run inside the plastic recess on the filter body to clear any grit.

Just another possibility.

@Sheag.....I would have no problem being the forum Agony Aunt. (but not all advice should be taken too seriously especially when it deals with the OH)
