Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys ,

I have a Rekord 800 with the standard juwel built in filter.I recently moved the tank into my front room and i find the filter very noisy .At night when the house is quiet there is a loud hum from the tank and its driving the wife mad, which she in turn is driving me mad.

If i remove the filter what are my options for quiet filters internal or external.Money will be a problem so im looking for a good comprimise of quiet/cheap.The tank has a capacity of 118L and its fresh water fish i keep.

Cheers Stuart.

Stuart,
Firstly a question,
Was the filter pump as noisy before you moved it?
At worst you could buy a new pump for the Juwel, or a new internal or external filter and remove the Juwel one completely.
My preferred choice for a quiet, reliable filter - be it internal or external - would have to be from the Eheim range. In my view nothing comes close. If money's an issue (and isn't it for all of us?) then I'd suggest the internal as first choice. I forget the code numbers, but both the Aquaball and the other internal they make are fairly reasonably-priced.
I have also used the Tetra-Tec internal ones, but I don't have a lot of faith in the longevity of this make and have several defunct ones in my shed.
The JBL CristalProfi i60 isn't a bad internal either and I do like the way they sit comfortably in the corner of the tank, held in place by an external magnetic bar.
So, that' a few suggestions to be considering, anyone else got any further suggestions?

Totally 100% John, if needed, any of the Eheim internals would be a super addition to any Tank.

IMO Rolls Royce.

Cheers John,

Yeah the filter had the same noise but before it was out in the hallway and you'd never really notice it, but when your sitting down watching telly it's quite annoying.Cheers for the suggestions i'll get a price on some of them and see how im fixed. If anyone has any of these filters for sale or just not being used send me a PM pls.

Cheers Stuart.

Can't argue with John's advice, but will add that after experience,I would not touch the TetraTec internals, and I'm a bit of a Tetratec freak,or was until I got into Eheim. I now try and avoid internals at all costs if I can.
A nice little Eheim Ecco Pro would(could) be ideal, depending on what sort of fish and plants you have, currents can be a bit strong.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Yeah cheers guys ill be on the hunt for something soon, i just dont want to spend money on something that will be just as noisy as what i have.

@Anto, yeah i firstly thought it was a problem with the filter itself, i had 3 of them and changed them around for a bit to see if it would work but same noise.

Cheers Stuart.

....................... there is a loud hum from the tank and its driving the wife mad, which she in turn is driving me mad.

I see no one has actually given you any useful advise yet on this thread. ;)

Buy her some roses, a nice new ring (Sapphire and Diamond would be my recommendation), some chick-flick blu-rays, and a popular book (won't say which one though), and start hoovering the gaff a few times.

There, sorted.
