Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i got replacement parts for my leaking tetratec ex1200 about 2 yrs ago that fixed the problem but it has started to leak again, could be something simple, not sure so I am thinking of swapping over to alternative make, i.e. one that doesnt have a known history of leaks.
any advise would be greatly appreciated, my tank is 460lts, maintenance,Noise, availability of parts/filter media etc and cost are paramount,

thanks guys and gals,
T

Look at some of the larger Eheim series of externals, I hear very good reports of the 'Professional' ones.
I don't think there are any better filters on the market.
(I think Eheim owe me a commission for all the recommendations I give out for their filters - but joking aside they are the dogs wotsits).

I was a Tetratec freak, but switched to Eheim, although still running the old Tetras. I wouldn't go too modrn with Eheim, some have very fragile bits on 'em,think it's the 'professional' series by memory,if you look on top they are sort of levers that go sideways to lock, these break very easily, and with the cost of the replacement part you may as well buy a new machine,a bit like Juwel and their light units.

Where is the filter leaking? Have you tried a new o-ring? I'd like to take a look, and would be well interested in it if you replace it.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

i purchased an o-ring and new hose adaper unit from ebay tonight, it was a cheap alternative to a new filter, will see what happens when I replace parts, if still leaking and I swap I'll let you know if you interested in parts.

Leaking tetratec filters and ever failing juwel light units (such a rip off) are the biggest pain in the hobby. I am surprised that the manufacturers have not come up with suitable methods to rectify these flaws in otherwise good basic products.

yeah the idea did cross my mind that if I woke to a flooded room, fish stressed, heaters burnt out that i would be taking leave of the hobby for a bit, Luckily i didnt and the leak seems to have settled down, thank god.

would be interested in hearing which model/series of Eheim filters would be recommended. They have a few different externals and not sure which ones are old/soon to be discontinued, the electronic ones > good idea or just another thing that can go assways???
thanks

Had the same problem with an EX700, it was only a miracle that I checked it and noticed the large plastic bowl that was underneath full of water. After a few tries, I managed to it stop the leak, but wasn't comfortable with it knowing it could leak again, so bought a JBL instead and retired the faulty one.

Since then, I got an EX1200 with a tank and it performed as it should. I had the chance to buy an extra motor head, just in case this will start leaking, so I guess I'm still paranoid about the Tetratecs.

Having said that, when they work, they are very good filters.

Here's a link that I've used once to gain a free spare part for a Tetra product - mind you it was still under warranty given the product was only realeased by them a year prior to my claim, so no questions asked.

that was the first place i went to and they listed teh hose adapter as out of stock, how annoying is that, they should be the last people to be of of stock !!!!! Then Ebay came to the rescue.
