wavemaker for discus, later tropheus setup
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi there, hope you can help with advice.
Have Discus setup at the moment, do think of changing to Tropheus, but thats just a thought at the moment, but don't want any purchases that could be useless after the change.
12000l/h wavemaker.. would it be too fast in 450L aquarium for Discus? or maybe too fast for Tropheus too?
Any thoughts?

i'd say a definate no for discus they are from slow water moving areas so this would pin em against the far end of the tank, as for tropheus never found the need to use one in my 800l a good external would provide all the flow neccessary

See I have a bare bottom tank with Discus, Black Ghost knife, royal pleco eating wood

all this is creating some waste.. I'm siphoning slow moving areas every day no messing.
either I have to get rid of pleco or wood or get more circulation.. maybe a slower wavemaker then? 3000l/h or so?
Anybody has advice on whats the best way to point FX5 filter output?
Thank you all for reply's in advance.

all a wave maker would do is force this gunk into the water column not clean it, if it is an fx5 filter you have do what i do have one of the outlets pointed down to raise the dirt from the bottom , the second outlet pointed towards the surface so you get good oxygen exchange and out the intake at the opposite end of the tank mid level or lower this should take all the gunk in as an fx5 is more than capable of doing this on a 450l aquarium. as for wood etc dont just have them against the back wall of the aquarium vary them in position which should eliminate deadspots

I had a power head in a 500L Discus tank and they didn't like it at all Discus don't like much flow as the lads already said
What i done was put a small powerhead in i think it was only 2500LPH just to prevent dead spots and to give my plants some flow and it was a very heavy planted tank if i didnt have many plants in it i wouldn't have put it in at all

So. My tank is ready for tropheus.. 450L with fx5. I was recommended to get a wave maker for these guys.. What sort of rating would you recommend? 3000 , 12000?
Cheers,
