Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all

I am considering an external for my 135L tank, so obviously I need some advice.

Firstly, has anyone used aqua one external filter? they seem to be good value.

Second, I see eheim have a filter with a heater which looks like a neat idea, again has anyone used these? And are they good?

Lastly, is a filter rated for 250L over specified enough or should I go even bigger if cash flow allows?

Thanks

Depends what your stocking your tank with...I mean if you have an Oscar (of course not in a 135 litre) you need to over over filter...but I would say overfilter if you can. In saying that a filter rated for a 250 litre will do the job just fine if you dont have messy fish in the tank,if you can go bigger then its going to turn over more water and keep it cleaner.

@Gavin Currently have angles 6 and rummynose tetras 12. Considering some cardinals and some mollies or guppies after the filter upgrade.

Are any of these in the dirty fish category?

I have a tetreatec on a 125 litre and have it on a190 litre now it's the 700 model great filter easy to get parts if something goes wrong as I over tightened hose connection once, and very quiet cheap enough as well and media available every were .

None of them are overly messy really,so the filter you are considering would be adequate for the tank.
Filters are fine as long as regular water changes are also done.

Hi

So I think I am going for a JBL e900. This will have to go at the end of my 4 foot not under so I am wondering if the inlet or outlet pipe will reach the opposite end of the tank?

Maybe someone has setup like this?

May go the extra for an eheim with a heater if someone here has used and can confirm they work well, anyone used one of these? taking out one or both of the heaters would tidy up the tank.

Thx

dec, u can never over filter a tank, my advise is to get the biggest filter u can get and reduce the out flow to suit your tank size so u wont have too much water movement. the more filter material u have the better for your water quality. second hand filters are always on the site but make sure to check the shaft and motor first.

Use Eheim thermofilters. I would recommend them.

their long enough to go 2ft. past the tank and your better off going for the e901 it uses less power

I use a 2 JBL Cristal profi external filters one 1500 Greenline and a 900 model on my 5 foot 380L tank for the last year and have had no problems with them.
They are easy to clean and maintain.
The return flow from the 1500 is quite strong depending on the size of your tank.
The 900 return flow though less is very good.
I maintain them at alternate dates so as not to disturb the biological process for the tank.

I would recommend buying the JBL Cristal Profi models . Make sure you get the Greenline models as they consume up to 40% less power or so they advertise.

Best of luck.
