Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Which Internal Filter - 450L tank

Hi all,

For various reasons I'm not a fan of external filters - had a BAD experience!!

I have a 450L Cichlid tank with about 35 fish and a single EHEIM PowerLine XL internal filter (see www.eheim.com/en_GB/products/technology/...al-filters/powerline) keeping things clean. It does a great job and the water is crystal clear. I've had this internal filter set up about 18 months and used to also have a large fluval internal filter supplementing the Eheim but it gave up the ghost a few weeks ago so I'm down to just the Eheim but it seems to be coping very well.

I don't like the idea of having just a single filter and would prefer to have a second filter in their, even if it's turned off on standby should the Eheim fail.

I'm therefore looking for recommendations on a new internal filter. I could just get another Eheim Powerline XL but am also open to alternatives.

Cheers,

Ben

Howya Ben personally in a cichlid tank that size with that amount of fish i dont think any internal filter would cope with the the waste properly, i have a 240 tank with 11 cichlids and have struggled in the past to keep it right untill i stuck a big external in it

one of the best filters on the market and value for money is the external JBL 1501 which i use and it does the job and it will be enough for your tank too, i also run a eheim 2036 with just poly-filter wool stuff just for an extra polisher and the water is crystal clear

as for having a filter in the tank on standby (not turned on) thats a waste of time, their wont be bacteria in it to do its job, be like taking out ur old filter now, and sticking a new one in, its not going to work (its dead)

Where the tongue slips, it speaks the truth.

A life making mistakes is not only more honourable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing at all.

Similar type of question and hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread. Can you supplement an internal filter with an external filter and run both at once??

Yes you can and is probably best because if one crashes then the other can pick up the slack.

Not sure if it is really needed though. I only have one external running on each tank.

On the original question, i would go external and just keep an eye on it if problems were encoutered before. I run a FX5 on a 550 litre tank and it does a great job. Very powerful filter

OK, confession time :(

I use and have successfully used Organic Aqua for over 2 years. I know that in some peoples eyes that makes me a cheat but I'm over that. I've had all the debates and my experience is the product works fantastically. I only have to do a 1/4 water change once a month (taking less than 30 minutes) and the cost of the Organic Aqua product is far outweighed by the fact I no longer have to buy other products, I save at least 500 litres of water a month and most iportantly of all I save at least 4 hours a month of my time NOT doing water changes. Here's a real shocker. I haven't tested the water in my tank in over 18 months and my fish are healthy and breeding :woohoo:

So, with that out of the way, the reason I don't use an external filter is twofold:-

1. I had a TetraTec 1200 external leak on me and destroy the floor.
2. I can just take out the sponnge filters from my internal, whack them on a short wash and rinse in the washing machine (no powder used!) put them back in nice and clean anc bob's your uncle. No messing around with live media or anything of the sort.

Its for this reason that I can keep another internal in the tank and just switch it on should the Eheim fail.

Now I'll duck down while the "OA is evil" brigade tell me how I'm such a poor fish keeper

I would just wash out the filter media in old tank water. If its filter wool then ya put it in for a wash if you like.
If it works for you then don't change it.

Lmfao   If your fish are happy and breading then hey your doing no harm.

Here is another question how do we all know if our fish are happy? Really what do i look out for besides the reproducing!

Lmfao

Here is another question how do we all know if our fish are happy?

I always check to see if they are active and alert. If there's plenty of action going on (depending on species of course) and the fish look lively and alert then all should be good. Physical condition is also something to look out for. Do the fish 'look' healthy?

Bottom line is none of us fell like a bit of jiggy jiggy if we're not feeling well or in good form so if babies are being produced they must be in good shape.

I wonder if OA is the fish equivalent of a few bevvies and curry on a Friday night :woohoo:

With this size of aquarium consider not 1 large external filter, but 2 smaller ( cheaper).

1 you will have backup in case one stops working
2 you can clean one, and don't care about bacteries in filter, then 3 weeks later you can clean 2nd one.
3 better filtration if water is sucked from 2 ends of aquarium.

Thats how it works in my 160l aquarium,

I hear ya Ben, I have been an advocate of OA for some years with no complaints. was recently enquiring about Organic Steve who hasn't been around for awhile. The one monthly water change was great, but I changed to the traditional weekly and stopped the OA. It's been awhile since an OA debate on d site. Again where are ya Steve hope all ok for you.
