Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am currently running a tetratec ex1200, i want to upgrade to something better, not going to say money no option, but i'm gonna try get he best out there, i am looking at the Eheim External Filter Professionel 3 Thermo 2180 or the Fx5. I like the Eheim removing the heaters from the tank would look well, but tis expensive. Any ideas comments or experience would be nice.

I like the eheims as the heaters built in,

But i would pick the FX5 any day over it great filter

When i had mine i was looking out for an line heater to fix the 1inch pipr off the fx5 but couldnt find one but you never know you might now

This way you get best off both worlds :)

Hi gonna borrow your thread a bit.

I've been looking for an ext and also thought the in filter heater sounded very neat but mossy is the fist person I've seen endorse them.

Anyone else use them?

Thx

Eheim have a history of good quality filters, but I think that some of the new guys on the block are also offering good stuff as well.

I have used Eheims years ago, but now I've switched to JBL and some Fluval Externals. All of the new guys work well. Each does have some advantages over each other though. The JBL do come with a nice range 'in-the-box' of water return systems without the need to buy additional tubing and pipes or spray-bars etc.

I think for financial reasons I will get the JBL e900 I could probably get an e700 for the smaller tank as well for the price of an eheim, but on saying that the eheims seem to have a reputation for being everlasting.

Decisions decisions

Non IFKS Review

Kev.

NOISE
Both filters are quiet by modern standards but the Fluval is a lot noiser then the Eheim measuring out at 43db @ 1 meter vs the Eheims 19db !
The Fluval is quiet but the Eheim is so quiet you have to check it see if its working !

POWER CONSUMPTION
Filters are used 24/7 365 days of the year so power is important. The Eheim is the clear winner here averaging 27w against the Fluvals 51w so the fluval would cost nearly twice as much a year to run as the Eheim.

For me these are the 2 major issues, not great on the sums so not sure how much fluval would cost to run for a year.
At the moment i am running 4 300w heaters 1 tetratec 1220, 1 fluval 405, 1 fluval 4 internal, 1 eheim pick up internal. My financial controller reckons its costing about 25/35 eurons a month to run the 2 tanks. So how long before i would see my return on the eheim, i could buy 2 fx5 and have both tanks crystal clean.
Reckon thats were i will be heading.

I have a JBL e1500 cristalprofi. So quiet I have to put my ear close to it to make sure it's working when switching on after a clean. 2 years no probs so far. Comes with a four year guarantee

Ps how often should you clean your pipes and any tips on the best way.

what an interesting chat, my bit for all its worth, ive an fx5 and an eheim 600 classic in a 4ft tank with lots of monsters, both are great filters, the fx5 has much stronger out flow so helps move the tank water and needs less cleaning, about every 4 months, the eheim is smaller but cheaper to run and mostly holds the bio filtration for me.if i had to run only 1 id pick the fx5 for easy of cleaning and it never gets air locked.
