Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Eheim 400 air pump

On Tuesday, I started cycling a tank three days ago, with a new Eheim 400 air pump powering an air stone and an Azoo Oxygen Bio Filter 2.

The pump has been running constantly since Tuesday morning, let's say three days, at about quarter power. There has been a smooth, low "buzz" from the pump. But this evening, the pump has started to "skip" every few minutes.

What I need help with, is it meant to buzz? The reviews I read said it was "silent." Is that a comparison to other pumps, as I had assumed, or have I got a noisy, faulty, model? What could be causing it to "skip"? And should I be planning to leave it running 24/7? Is it safe to do that?

Please forgive the stupid noob questions.

Thanks for the help!

Yeah filters should be left on 24/7.

The low buzz seems normal to me. Shouldn't be too loud though.

Not sure why it's skipping though because don't have experience with this filter. Is the outflow constant?

Hopefully someone else has experience of an Azoo Oxygen Bio Filter 2 on here?

I don't think the filter is the issue here... have you tried running the pump with an airstone?

If the result is the same, check the pump...

That's the filter I'm using. The pump has two outlets, so I am using one of the supplied Eheim airstones on the second outlet. I swapped the two outlets this morning, but I've still got the little skip every few minutes.

I'm going to turn off the pump for an hour to give it a "rest" and I'll be able to sit and read in the same room for a few hours to listen for any change. Also, I'll try it with the two airstones for a while to see if that changes anything.

(Yes I know- sad woman! Anyone normal is planning to head for the pub on a Friday night!)

Thanks for your help.

Not so sure about your air pump as I'm a bit of a noob(iPhone wants to make that knob must be careful of auto correct) but sitting quietly listening to an air pump sounds lovely throw in some fish to look at and a decent book and you've got heaven on earth IMHO

Well, I not only had a lovely, peaceful evening, I solved it! I think the pump issue is an electrical supply issue. When I turned on the main room light, I noticed the light flickers at the same time as the pump. Checked with a neighbour, says that it is all over the building, for whatever reason, and electrician is notified.

In my defence, I didn't put two and two together last night cause I don't normally use the main light, just lamps. Thanks to all for your help.

Q_Comets- I can't wait until I have fish to watch, but that is still at least eight weeks away! I am told that patience is a virtue.
