Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

T5 HO Vs Normal T5 Lights - Is there a difference?

Hey lads. I currently have two 'Life GLO T-5 HO Fluorescent Bulbs - 24 Watt' over my tank. Now I haven't changed these bulbs since I got the tank 3-4 years ago so I reckon they are due a chance (although the plants are still doing alright!).

Now to the question - Is there a difference between T5 HO (High Output) bulbs that I have and your run-of-the-mill T5 bulbs? Or are all T5 bulbs HO?? Looking around online (haven't had a chance to look in Sponsors shops yet), most bulbs seem to be just T5 so I am just wondering. Or could someone recommend where I could get these HO bulbs either online, or in a shop?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Bill

Would anybody have input on this please?? :) I am just looking on Zooplus and see they have a few bulbs that are from different manufacturers but have 24W on them and look the right size. Is T5 HO just a Hagen term I wonder?

If the wattage is correct, is this all I am looking for? I have no idea when it comes to these sort of things.

HO might be 7500k tubes.
Theyre bright.
I used to have a daylight tube which wasnt as bright.
So I mixed them for the effect.
I now have 2 HO tubes on my 190L.

It has nothing to do with Kelvin , from what i recall T5HO will draw nearly twice the wattage and produce about twice the brightness compared to normal T5NO bulbs , there 15-30% more economical for 50-75% more light output at the same bulb length in T5NO.

Normal Shop T5 is perfect for planted tank ,4000k,6500k easily got and only a fiver each thats what i use now

Hope this helps

Michael

Can you expand on that ?

Is T5HO a higher Lumens value ?

@blade. So €5 in an electrical shop instead of €30 in LFS and you're using these on your planted tank(s)?

Hi , yes that`s what i use in my planted tanks , fed up paying mad money for bulbs that last 10-12mths ,
Plants will adjust to what light you supply Daylight is around 6500k , its what suits your preference best for plants & fish colours , i find 8000k & 6500k go well together ,i am no expert any info i have found mostly on the net.
T5HO come in more sizes also

heres a little table i found that might help:-

Table 1-2. T5 and T5 HO Lamps
(From manufacturers' catalogs; Philips Lighting 2001/2002; GE Lighting 2001/2002)

Lamp Type Nominal Length CCT Light Output* (lm) Lamp Efficacy**
(inch) (Kelvin) Initial Mean

T5 14W 22 3,000-6,500 1,350 1,269-1,275 96
T5 21W 34 3,000-6,500 2,100 1,974-2,000 100
T5 28W 46 3,000-6,500 2,900 2,726-2,750 104
T5 35W 58 3,000-6,500 3,650 3,431-3,450 104
T5 HO 24W22 3,000-6,500 2,000 1,880-1,895 83
T5 HO 39W34 3,000-6,500 3,500 3,290-3,320 90
T5 HO 54W46 3,000-6,500 5,000 4,700-4,740 93
T5 HO 80W58 3,000-6,500 7,000 6,580-6,650 88

* Light outputs are measured during lamp operation on reference ballasts under standard laboratory conditions. T5 lamps are operated at 35°C (95°F) compared to T8 and T12 lamps, which are operated at 25°C(77°F). Mean light output means lamp light output at 40% of rated lamp life.
** Lamp efficacies are calculated based on the initial light output data.

Thank you for all the replies lads, think I am getting my head around it now!

Michael - Forgive my ignorance, but where would I get shop lights? Are they in hardware stores like Woodies, or online? Also am I reading right, that you can get a T5HO shop light?

Thanks
