Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Best position in tank for heater placement

Where is the best place to position your heater(s)? Just bought a new tank - 370l or so. Lfs recommended two JBL Protemp S 200w heaters. I had one 300w in my 180l tank and never an issue. These heaters say they are accurate up to .5 degree but have both up at 30c and tank will only go to just under 28c. I had asked the guy in the shop if I should use 300w versions and he said no that two 200w would be perfect. It me thinking if it is the position I have them placed in the tank itself.

I've one heater placed vertically in each bak corner beside the inflow pipes to two canister filters running. Any thoughts? Should I place them horizontally across the back of the tank? Does it matter? Or is it they are simply not powerful enough? If it's the power (heater says its good for between 100l -300l but I do have two of them) should I bring them back and look for the 300w versions?

Thanks...

I'm using 2x 300w heaters in a Trigon 350, I have 1 heater placed after the outtake into the canister filter and the other one set after the inlet from the filter again!
So any water circulating past the outtake is being heated, also any water coming back into the tank from the filter is being heated
My tank is constantly within 0.5 degrees of the heaters setting!

I have 330lt with two heaters 300w & 200w one in each corner by the intake and outflow. Can just about make 30 degrees when heater says 33. Think you have them in the right place but mIght need higher watt/ power.

Unless your tank is in a chilly room I would have thought that your two 200watt heaters are well adequate for the task.
I always found heater placement to be less important when the water is being turned over - and yours is certainly doing that, with two power filters.
I just wonder about whether the heaters are maybe not quite as accurate as is being claimed perhaps you might turn them up to - say - 32 degrees to see if this reaches your desired 30degrees.

Just a thought, can anyone else offer any suggestions here?

John
