Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all

Quick question is there such a thing as a t5 to t8 adaptor?

Reason is I have some new t5's that are going to waste, my juwel light unit was not working when I bought the tank (surprise surprise) so I am using one of them light units with just the sockets on the wire and its a t8 one, to save me buying a t5 unit is there any sort of adaptor that will make the t5 fit into the t8 socket?

If so could you post a link to somewhere I could get some

Cheers
Danny

Danny - as far as I'm aware the T5s work with an entirely different ballast system and they are not interchangeable.
Hopefully someone will be along presently with a more comprehensive electrical knowledge than I who will be able to tell you categorically, but I do think that - for once - I'm right.

Yeah as far as i know you can get a conversion kit to go from T8-T5, this is a site that sells them although i have never used it. Not sure if these will work for an aquarium though.

Hope it helps. the problem with the light unit on the juwel is probably the ballast you can pick up a new ballast for about 20-25 euro from any good electrical supplier, i have a thread in the DIY section on how i replaced mine you should check it out.

Might have a look at that because my other unit just went on me, I thought it was the starter so I'm just back from getting a new one and no joy so I may as well bite the bullet now and try fix the juwel as I don't think a new unit is in my tank allowance :(

Yeah its not as complicated as people think but then again on my Juwel it was easy to access the ballast. Here is the link to the thread i hope the pictures uploaded properly. If you have any questions just ask.

Just to add to your experiences Stuart here's a link to the article Colin published in 2011 showing how his friend did it - it might help.

I think this was entered to quite a lot of fora as well as ours, but it was worth adding to Stuart's advice as well.

Yeah, this is the walk through that i used before i attempted this. Mine was made easier because i didnt have to cut the sealed unit. Once you take the ballast out just bring it to an electrical lighting shop and they can give you an exact ballast. When you put it back in make sure its sealed up good to prevent moisture getting into the new unit and blowing it.

The fittings I have are not water proof that I know of but the ballast is OK
I will compare them to my t8 and see if they can be made water proof if all fails I
Will order in two for you and have them during the week.
