Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a JBL Crystalprofi e901 on one of my tanks. A good filter and extremely quiet.

I have one I could sell you I think. Just the filter and sponges. No other media or hoses.

Hi we sell a lot of 406 they are extremley reliable i have never had a return plus the agent is in northern ireland so parts are not a problem....you can check our website if you like www.aquatic-village.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/406.jpg
they are the longest serving filterts in the trade......if you need any help you can message our facebook page we can get back to you quickly. The 306 is probably more suitable for planted tank slightly less flow rate unless you are going for a bit more flow we sell 306 for €119.99......save you some dosh.....

As a 180L is not really big enough for an African set up (being a bit presumptuous with what your keeping) i would go with a filter rated for a tank 300L +...........As mentioned above the Fluval 406 is a good filter and it done a good job on a 180L for me in the past (well the older version 405 did).

Hi just bought the JBL CristalProfi e901 greenline & got it set up pretty easily & by the way thanks for all the advice everyone, just have one issue to deal with, I am trying to get the compartment which holds the heater & juwel filter out of my rio 180 & its causing more than a few problems bearing in mind the fish are in situ. Anyone got any advice how to remove it? Thanks

If it is siliconed on the tank some fishing line will do the trick otherwise use a stanley knife blade.

+1 on that. It's not difficult, I've done it on 5 different tanks. Even with the fish present it shouldn't be too much of a headache. There are 4 pads of adhesive on each side of the filter housing. There'll be some adhesive still stuck to the glass but it'll come off with a razorblade.

Thanks for the advice guys had a long steel ruler & carefully cut into the silicon & the box came out in 5 minutes, but the amount of crap that was nestled in behind & underneath the box was absolutely disgusting, had to do a major water change & the new filter is getting its first real test this evening. Let you know how it gets on :)

Cant rate the JBL CristalProfi e901 highly enough. It had a huge job to clean up the tank after the mess the removal of the juwel casing caused. Have to admit it didnt clear well in the first couple of hours but when i got up the following morning I have never seen my tank so clear. It almost looked like the fish were floating on air. Big thumbs up    for this filter
