juwel 260 light fitting

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

morning everyone
after a year or so without the tank up and running ive finally got some africans back in it and slowly but surely building it back up to how it was before (see pic)
but, the last few days the light fitting had been flickering, and when i put my first buys in the other day, the light has completely gone now. typical.
now i am an electrician so was maybe thinking of maybe trying something with putting up wall lights behind and above the tank or just straight replacing it. its a juwel 260.
anyone any ideas or advice on what to use or alternatives or am i just aswel to buy a new complete fitting to save all the messing around??

Yes, from your first post I saw that you were considering the exterior lighting alternative - I just thought you might be interested in this option should you have decided to buy a Juwel replacement as it could work out cheaper than a new complete hood..
The LED option is becoming more and more popular these days I have noticed.

If ya are gonna Retro fit new lights LEDs are definitely the way to go...They will save you money in the long run (cheaper to run) and last much longer....
Im an electrician myself and used to have a Juwel Rio 180...It probably sounds stupid but i used to find if the tubes werent sitting in just right they flickered and went out...And if one tube goes neither will work...Im probably patronising you here but make sure your tubes are sitting in right and that one simply hasnt gone from old age preventing the other from working...

i did give the pins a quick glance over but didnt pay too much attention to them, ill have another look tonight. otherwise i may go down the route of an LED strip light
don't go open top with african cichlids they like to jump especially when a male is chasing,
the led light strip is the only way to go. have good look them juwel light fittings can be simple enough to fix check the ballast and the light starter Check and see if its corroded a new one might solve the problem
Something fishie going on here

Yes I've experience in that. My 4 year old male frontosa (my pride and joy ha) from my last set up went 'missing' on me one time! Found him behind the tank when I got home from work. To this day I'm baffled how he managed to jump up knock the flap up and fall over the side
