Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New 470l tank and 300w Heater

Received my new tank today which was sold complete with heater, filter and Substrate.

I received enough coral sand to just about cover the bottom so I'll have to buy more. The filter is a Fluval FX5 which I'm happy with as I've heard good things about them. It's also rated up to 1,500l.

However, I only received a 300w heater which is only rated up to 300l. Will this suffice for a Malawi tank where the temperature will be around 25c? I know the Juwel 400 and 450 only have 300w heaters.

I know it will be prudent to add another 300w or 200w longer term as back up. If it won't suffice then I'll chase up Blanchardstown for an additional heater, but I wouldn't fancy my chances.

Regards,

Ken.

Thanks Deeco. Sort of reckoned that. I'll stick with this one and add another 300w over the next few week. Think I'll try blagging one of Petstore. I've nothing to loose.

Ken.

Hi Ken,
it really depends what make the heater is. A 300w Jaeger Eheim gets my 600l to 34 degrees even in winter if needs be. However, I would go for two 200W heaters. Again an Eheim would be plenty for your tank. Should one heater fail at least you have back-up.

Thanks Holger.

It's an Elite by Hagen. I'll take it back today and see if they'll swap for 2x200w.

Ken.

Hi Ken,

I have beem running my 775litre off 1 300W heater,Winter and Summer.I find the positioning of the heater can affect how well your tank is heated or not heated.I have mine positioned around 3\" away from the outlets of the FX5.The outlets point towards the opposite corner of the tank and thus a circultation is created.Once heated and maintained at a steady temperature you should never have any problems, just maintenance.

Thanks Chris. I dropped out to Petstop today and managed ot blag an additional 200w. I'll try the 300w and see how I do. if it's struggling, I'll add the 200w.

If the 300w heater's thermostat gets stuck it will make fishsoup in your tank. better go for 2 heaters with a lower wattage
