Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have picked up a second hand Juwel Rekord 96.
The internal filter does not have any filter baskets that hold the sponges. Does anyone know where I can get these?

The Juwel website does not have that specific part.
I can get them online, was hoping I could get one in a shop in the Dublin area.

Why would the tank be better off?
A replacement of any kind is going to cost me money.

You have to speculate to accumulate, as they say.

You can get a great internal like a Fluval 3+ or 4+ on ebay for less than €40 or €50 (delivered to your door) respectively or you could invest in a good external.
You will not regret it.
Get yourself a tetratec EX600 or 700 €60 & €70 (delivered to your door) from Zooplus.ie

I think there are a lot of filter snobs in the hobby and I'm one of them.
Tear that POS Jewel rubbish out and get yourself a proper filter.

And to finish off my semi rant I have a full internal box from a Jewel 70 (I think) in my shed, its yours for nothing (but let me check the wife didn't throw it out).

I would have to agree, cut it out and get an external preferably or a decent internal. It will be miles better either way.

Regards,

Ken.

Ok, i have to agree and disagree:blink:

I agree that Externals are great filters and can be handy to maintain etc.....

But

The Juwel Filters have a huge area in them for filter media, they rarely clog up as the powerheads are very strong in them, they are better for removing mechanical waste due to where the grates are placed on the top and further down the casing.

You don't have to use the Juwel filters with the baskets. You don't need the baskets. I used to have mine full of ceramic and full of small cubes of sponge. Never any problems with water quality. But they are a bit ugly;)

Just use the filter without the baskets, i guarantee you do not need them.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

Disagree with that Pete, sort of.
The powerheads in the small tanks are rubbish, barely a trickle.
the one for the 240 and the 400 were decent, but only in a size smaller tank.
Its my experience (and I've ripped them out of four different sizes now) that the supplied powerhead is really overrated and should be fitted to a size smaller tank.
If you really, really want that big ugly box taking up 10% of your tank space then I'd recommend getting a bigger powerhead for it.
Think of it as pimping your ride.

I have 5 juwel tanks of various sizes. I removed the juwel from two for aestetic reasons and left them in the others as they were not show tanks. That is the only reason I would remove them. I find they are excellent filters and easy to maintain.

I was led to believe they were crap, after running three for about a year I don't find that to be the case.

I agree the powerheads could be better, but you can buy higher rated powerheads from juwel if you wish, cheaper than an external too.

I suppose I should add that the problem for me is the poor powerheads and too much space lost inside the tank. The filter area is, as Peter said, huge compared to other internals. Its purely a personal choice. If cost is the issue, get your baskets and maybe upgrade the powerhead.
If cost isn't so much an issue, I'd go for the external.
The choice of course is yours!!!
