Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fluval 4 Plus or Eheim Aquaball 2212

Last week I had a close call when the output on my FX5 all but diminished. My fish were gasping and I wasn't far away from disaster. The culprit appeared to be the Polyfilter. I was well past its best and was seriously restricting water flow.

The FX5 is the only filter I have on the tank (470l) and I've decided to add an internal for backup. It will at least keep the surface distuption going and buy me some time if the FX5 fails again.

I've been looking at the Fluval 4 Plus and the Eheim Aquaball 2212. They're both made for aquariums up to 200l and are around the same price. However, the Aquaball is a lower wattage. Only disadvantage of the Aquaball is that it's green so will stand out. The Fluval is black so will be less obvious.

I'm leaning towards the Eheim as they have a great reputation. Any thoughts?

Hi Ken,
I bought 2 eheim aquaballs about a year ago.
I've since replaced both with fluval 3s.

TBH I found the aquaballs to be rubbish, there was no power in them at all. The fluval which is comparable in price is just far superior when it comes to taking care of business..

Cheers,
Patrick.

I've gotta say i used have all fluval in my aquariums but have now converted most to eheim i find them to be far superior and longer lasting... that being said the fluval205 i still use in one of my aquariums is still fantastic but found the internals always clogged too fast for my liking.. as for the colour a bit of artistic license with your setup will hide the colour;)

Hi Ken,
I had the Fluval 4+ was an excellent for my 36 tank but i got rid of it it was to good while the water quility was perfect but You need to rinse the sponge once a week the problem i found was to strong for my fry(new born) and the females loved to hide there to birth.

I now have a fluval 2+ and Fluval 205 and don,t think i have as good quality now as i did then

The Fluval4+ is ideal for your tank Ken.It is quiet, powerful and effective.Iy you dont want it to get clogged remove one of the sponges and replace with ceramic rings, thats what I did and it gets cleaned every 2 or 3 months.

I have mine on a Tropheus tank and they require very clean water so that tells me the 4+ works.

my vote goes to fluval,
eheim are usually great, but their suckers never last
and the aqua balls seem to get clogged and slow very quickly.
