Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

The light unit on Trigon 190 stopped working yesterday.
The tank is about two years old, bulbs are fairly new.

I tried changing the fuse & bulbs to no avail..

I'm not sure there's anything more I can do with it other than write it off - any suggestions?

Cheers,
Patrick.

Wow - thanks for the offer Adriano - where would I have to bring it to?

The problem I have of course is time..
I am in the process of packing up my house at the moment as I'm moving in a couple of weeks so I am constantly busy..

Is there anything I could try to fix it myself this evening or does it generally need someone with experience like yourself to fix them?

Thanks again,
Patrick

It would be the most popular sized tube - same diameter would be used in flourescent office lighting.

I think T8

lol great to see someone that knows their stuff !

I'm going to get a price on a new one this morning as if there is one in Kinsealy I can collect it on my lunchbreak.

If that doesn't work out though I would greatly appreciate your services!

My cichlids get super aggressive when the light is off.
I've had to cover the tank with a blanket to prevent them fighting, the noise from the tank last night was unreal with fish splashing on the surface...

Thanks again for your help & advice

Was looking at the lighting on my Juwel Lido 120 this morning and as far as I can see it's a fully sealed unit

Can you get in there at the electronics to replace parts or even a simple starter if something goes wrong? Surely you don't have to buy a complete new unit?

Thanks. :)

Anybody got an answer to this? I.E. Can you get in there at the electronics to replace parts or even a simple starter if something goes wrong?

Cheers,
Tom.

i think they changed the design of these a couple of years ago because of problems with water getting in at ballast and so,the fully sealed them know which is probably the lesser of two evils because they last longer but is a pain if they do go.i know i had to change a whole unit about 18 mnths ago becuase the only way to see what was wrong was to try cut the whole thing open
hope this helps
john

Puggy, Did it come apart neatly or did you break it up when opening it up?

Thanks John; not the answer I was looking for but it sounds typically Juwel from what I can see.

Hopefully my light unit will be trouble free..... :)

I got an old rekord 70 with lid/light from a friend. The light did not work so i prised apart the unit to replace the starter. It works fine, glued it back with silicone sealant. Be careful if your doing this, don't have it plugged in etc.

My Juwel T5 lightbar stopped working too. It was hardly used but unfortunately it was out of warranty. I did some research and found that they are quite problematic.

There is a great step-by-step guide on how to replace the ballast here: www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/2655...ing-juwel-light-bar/

As per the instructions, be sure to label your wires before removal from ballast so you can remap them to the new ballast. Draw up a mapping table to help you figure out which wires go where on the new ballast, using the wiring schematic on the ballasts as your guide.

I got a replacement ballast at my local electrical supplies for EUR 25. I think Aquaworld do them too.

The T5 unit for a Jewel 180 seems to be slightly non-standard at 2x45 watt ratings. I got a 2x49 watt T5 ballast which was the closest available.

Unit is now back working perfectly and saved myself EUR 100. As all the "surgery" is on the bottom side of the light bar you wouldn't ever know.

Usual disclaimers of DIY, electricity and water apply :-)
