Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a 54lt tank in the bedroom and have started setting it up.I am going with a sponge filter but the air pump is so loud and i was thinking of making a box and covering he pump in old bits of foam to keep the noise down.Is this safe.Might there be a chance of fire.Any tips to keep the noise down would be great.

If you put the pump on some foam it would help
I would not put it in a box because it might over heat

Hi Orca,
I find that air pumps are best when suspended from a hook or nail the rubber legs are quite suffenct plus is best above the tank( not always possiable so a check valve is a must!!!!!!!!!!)

a mouse mat or tea cloth under the legs will reduce the noise

There used to be a guy that sold the piston air pumps on ebay.
Try placing the pump in a net bag like the ones you get onions in and hang it from a hook.
What make of pump is it?

Hi orca,
you would have to purchase one suitable for your tank and what you wish it to do.

if for example you want to add a bubble wall you will need a pump with two outlets which will provide the required pressure.

i would work on the principle that you need one liter of air per liter of water every hour thus you need a pump that will give you that. look for ones that are decribed like in this add from ebay
cgi.ebay.ie/AirFlow-mini-Aquarium-fish-t...12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

i only use it as an example i am not saying it is the one for you!!!!!!!

my pumps of choice are hagen elite

Hi mickey,
I need a pump that would run a sponge filter and a small air stone. The tank is a 54lt and in the bedroom so noise is a no no.I find the tetratec pump to be very loud for the bedroom.

This may be way off, and I don't personally know the TetraTec pumps but Whisper Pumps from way back used to have an air filter on the bottom of them and if these filters became clogged (which happened with more regularity than you might think) the pumps would get very noisy - they were very easily cleaned under the running tap or, if beyond that stage, were only pence to replace.

Hoffman pumps were very quiet and extremely reliable, but these too might not be any longer available.

Other than that I have stood noisy air pumps on bath sponges with limited success at noise reduction.

How did you overcome the noise problem yourself?

John
