Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

adding a large reptile to your tank would certainly clean it, of all your fish.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Ya I use 1 and I made it myself for less than 30 euro
Be careful when refilling the tank, as the water from the tap is extremely cold this time of year ;)

A python is for doing water changes its a hose basically with a few modifications made to it so that you use the water from your kitchen tap to start a siphon from your tank, when you remove enough water you close part of the hose and refill the tank straight from the tap ;)

Sounds like no more buckets with this product. How do you get your water temp good if you refill straight from the tap and how can you condition your water.

I take about 2 hours to refill the tank slowly I mix the conditioner in a bucket with warm water and add it to the tank I also add about 6 kettles of boiling water while the tank is refilling and I keep a close eye on the thermometer if the temp starts to drop more than a degree I will turn off the tap and wait a while for the temperature to stabilize.
It’s not a perfect way to do a water change but it’s the best I have found so far for changing 100L of water.

Wow LB wish I had waited now to order the thing, although it might still be handy if I need to replace parts of it.

I made sure there are no copper pipes to my taps and have been using warm water from the tap (should I be shot now?)
All fish have survived so far, even have fry growing in there so hopefully I didn't do them too much damage by using the warm straight from the tap

hi all

i'd like someone to confirm or dispel a related rumour

i have heard that its okay to use your hot water
if you use a new type boiler?

my house was entirely replumbed within
the last year and uses a gas fired
brand new eco friendly etc etc boiler

it would save me so much hassle and
truly make using a python brilliant
if i could use my hot water from the tap

i currently boil 3 kettles and 2 large
pots on the hob to do a 50l change
once a week :(

Hi 4,
dont know about the new boiler type but i prefer to be a little more cautious, my method is to have a spare tank running with conditioned water heated to the right temp with a spare external running empty of media just for agitation, then when i drain old water from my tank i simply turn off the spare tank and fill my tank from it..refill the spare again turn it back on and hey presto next weeks water change ready a week in advance.. ps if your really lazy (like me) an extra long outlet hose for the external means no carrying just put the outlet in the main tank to refill
ps this only works if you can get away with having a spare near your main tank... lucky me with a fish shed ;)

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Hi All,

I have a 50ft Python System for the last 3 years and I think it’s great and easy way to do water changes, I have kept Malawi’s, Tanganyikan’s, and South American’s in this tank, all at different times of course. I normally take out about 100lts from my 450lt. tank and immediately put back in a cold/ hot water mix slightly colder than the water I have just removed. Sometimes I add conditioning and some times I don’t. I have never lost any fish because of this, in fact you normally get a breeding frenzy a couple of hours to a day after the water change.

All my plumbing is plastic pipes and the hot water tank is 3 years old, but I think it has a good coat of lime.

The link below is the hose I use. Best of luck…………….Tom.

Fine I have a new house and no copper pipes, I use the warm tap water with it, just had to figure out to keep the end of the python above the waterline

Down here ...Have no copper pipes but have a water softener on all pipes in (salt added to water) so have to feed tanks from a cold pipe which is not softened but which doesn't have salt added .... So no python for me...:( :( :( :(

some people actually use the cold tap and still ad the warm water manually to keep the temp stable, kinda defeats the purpose a bit I suppose
