Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Lads
I priced some of these a while ago in an Irish wholesalers and found the price a bit crazy.., Damian - the e bay price seems a lot better then the quote that I got
Since then I've got my hands on some 1 mtr rigid strips ( Bright white 24 Volts Fully encapsulated ) I'm just about to refurbish a hood and fit them into it,I'll let you know how I get on with it,tho I have a feeling I may have to get some blue ones to add in as well.

Does it seem to be the same?
allegro.pl/item883683069_elastyczna_list...nas_warto_kupic.html
I'll ask the seller if it can be used in a fish tank.
I have LED bulbs in my living room but I had no idea it can be used in tanks.

are you doing as extra light or the entire light source?
is it marine use? im thinking planted tank

heres a whopping thread about it on ukaps
it seems that less amounts of large led
are the job for planted tanks

Hi Damian
Not yet...:) I had planned on using the lights in an old wooden hood I was refurbishing but I came across some black (plastic type) sheeting which is being used in work and I'm now thinking of building a new hood using this instead ,I want to see if I can get away with using the led strips on their own rather then as secondary to the fluorescent bulbs.I just have to go and talk nicely to the lads in sub assembly in work ....:)

Dont know how they would be with plants, but apparantly PFK have a full article on them in their issue this month. Could be of interest!! there is a bit on their website about it too, buts its just saying that they have done a load of research about the difference between LED, and says

"The article in next month's magazine provides an in-depth look into the KR-91 and KR-92 models produced by Ecolamps, Arcadia's OT2-LED, a pendant from Reef Beam, Coraled's luminaire as well as TMC's marine white and reef white 1000 HD tiles and their 500 LED strip counterparts."

Could give you the answers to your questions about using LED lighting!

Just a little aside but I was talking to some guys about developement of LED technology, I work in a University, plasma technology and all that and the next big thing is OLED, much brighter than any led available today so it looks like Halides and fluorescents will be saying a big bye bye.

I am using the Aquaray Aquabeam 500 duo, so far so good, shimmer effect is fab, fish colours and Shrimp are better than normal tf and t8.

I bought mine from ebay.... put 2 of them in my 6 foot and the light looks very impressive. No fish or water in the tank so its hard to judge. I will post pics when I get a chance. Also way cheaper than anything else I have seen

Kev,
Go back to Damian's first post in this thread (page 1) as he quotes an ebay url there.

Like everyone else I'm interested about these and am keen to hear his opinion of them once set up.
However, Seamus' later post doesn't sound too enthusiastic, does it.
I started looking into LEDs for aquarium lighting four or five years back, as soon as I had bought an LED torch but back then the future wasn't looking very bright (excuse pun) for our use.
However, as with most things new the technology has increased by leaps and bounds and ever brighter ones are now becoming available.

But - as usual - for Aquarists the brightness isn't all that matters, we have to consider colour temperature as well...but doubtless in time it will be sorted.

These are the ones i bought...
cgi.ebay.ie/5-units-AQUARIUM-LED-LIGHT-T...e47136#ht_975wt_1165

Got 5 units. Shipping was $70 which is expensive, but it still means I got 5 of them for about €90

My tank is bare at the moment so not much of a point in pics. Hopefully will have water in it by the weekend. Yes there are 5x 3 foot tubes. I put 2 of these in my 6x2x2 and thats looks to be more than enough.

hi damien

im watching this too

is it a seperate unit
or the ones that clip into existing t8 fixtures

is there transformers?
any issue with 110v

are they really 5mm diameter led?
that seem to the make or break with aquarium LED

as i mentioned before i tried about 100
of the tiny LED in a luminaire and you would hardly
even known it was on, no throw at all

thanks

Thanks for sending the revised address, like everyone else who has posted, I, too, will be keen to hear your observations on them once the tanks fully running.

cheers, sorry i made you so angry ;)

regarding the 5mm led thing...
lots of people have tried different types on the planty forums
and have come to the conclusion that you need a small amount
of big 2-3w leds... are yours about a quarter inch in diameter?

look forward to the pics, i would be interested
in a close up of the leds with a finger or something in the shot
for a idea of the size of the led and the unit itself
if its not too much hassle

cheers
