Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i had the same issue and i sucked on the filters out flow, disgusting? yes, did it save me from killing the fish? yes. after that i had the idea of wat if i attached my syphon onto it

edit: i have the 405 and it turned out the bar that held the suction cup on the self primer was bent, not sure if the 305 is the same

Hi Denis, just got your pm, I hate the sucking/blowing bit so here's what I normally do, I pull the intake Tube/Pipe from where it is in the Tank, not off the Filter mind you, just the bit going down into the Tank, I get someone to hold it and with a Funnel, then I pour treated water into the tube till bubbles come out the return tube, when that happens , the Filter is full of Water and very little Air is left inside then just switch the Filter back on.

Always works for me.

Kev.

or even handier fill the filter with treated water first set it up then carry out Kevs steps, you might be able to pull the process off on your own

Its best to take water from the tank to keep the media fed.
As said, fill the cannister from the tank, till almost full and you can top it up by removing the hosing connector after you seal the cannister, when full pop that back in and turn on the filter, you may have some slight bubbles which will clear after some time.

This can be more of an issue with lenghty hosing when a bit of air gets into the filter

Hi all.

Thanks guys lots of great suggestions there.
It says not to fill the filter after cleaning it, but to do it with the self primer??????
Yes i have checked the primer looks a little worn and only after 4 months...
The hose is rather long, but will be moving the tank soon so it will do till then.
Its working fine this morning, looking to get another external, i might skip the fluvals this time.
Thanks again lads..

Denis

Yep empty filter and hose over 3 feet and the primer doesnt have the moxy to get water into the filter. If it happens again Denis before you replace, just fill it pop top back on remove ribbed hosing and top it off and put hosing back on and turn on, always worked for me as I had a bent primer on a 405.

Glad you got sorted Denis.

I recently discovered the answer to all filter priming needs...
Get a pump like one out of a Juwel filter. Position it so its pumping water into the intake of the filter and keep doing so until the water gushes out of the spray bar.
Viola. Filter primed you just need to plug it in.

The 05 range has a lot of bugs for sure. So much so I havnt even considered the new line of filters from fluval...better out there for less.

don't be sure on that, as mine lost over half it's power in the last week. you wont be stuck again if you invest in a decent one

if yer media is gunked up or incorrectly arranged this can seriously reduce the filters flow rate. Just fyi mate, prob not the case.

I am using Tetratec 1200s and never had an issue though others have. Good flow nice big cannister with rakes of room for media, 4 large trays.

I wonder if the power goes can the primer on a tetratec 1200 be used to keep filtering the tank manually?, obviously this would need to be repeated every 30-40 minutes or so, but I'd do it to keep things alive.

Im using a Tetratec Ex 1200 now on the tank that my 405 failed on and so far so good. Plenty of flow, easy cleaning and pretty much noise free. That said, I have been hearing good things about the new JBL external canister filters so they may be worth a bit of research. Ehiem are also a well respected name in the filter market but can be a little on the pricey side.
