Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi there. I don't know what your location is but I do happen to know that Kinsealy Pet Shop have got sealing rings in stock for the Fluval 405 at the moment, not many shops will have these in stock... They will be open at 10am in the morning.

Your options for tonight might be to do very small and frequent water changes if you don't have a spare filter knocking around, or an airpump to oxygenate the water.

I hope this is of help to you.

Hi John,

There are lots of Fluval bashers out there and I too have had a leak but it was because I put the seal on with a twist in it, take off the seal and hold it under a good light to check if it's cracked etc, if not you may have had a twist in it, people should buy silicone grease specifically for the seal, to keep it supple.

Obviously the above depends on the problem being the seal, is it?

Better off with a tetratec 1200

The 405 is decent, as is the 305 at filtering, its the primer and cannister deisgn that doesn't stand up to regular maintanence over a long time due to the nature of their use.
Why doesn't the O seal fail repeatedly on other filters, most others don't actually crush the seal ring like the 2 3 405s does when you seal it. Hence the constant failure of these O rings. Primer, it is terrible. Not capable of filling the filter with it, terrible just terrible, the tt 1200 primer can fill an empty filter and refil it when power is out for emergencies, 405 no power, you're stuffed.

The Tetratec 1200 also has a wider cannister with wider media trays which ensures a longer high output duration as it simply takes longer for the media to become gunked up, especially if use have plants or use polishing pads(Flow stoppers big time) meaning less maintenance over all, you can close off intake or output independently and cleaning it, even opening it is a lot less mess than a *05 series.

The Fluval are compact and very quiet though, the Tetratec 1200 is quiet too but a bit bulkier.
Fluval ribbed hosing is rubbish and fatigures and splits because of its poor bend radius, Tetratec hosing takes a beating and just asks for "more please":)

If room for a wider filter in the filter spot, go for a Tetratec 1200, as for manufacturing defects, they can arrive with any filter you buy, some have had issues with the 1200 but no more than with any other on the market I think.

There are others out there too of better design, but the 1200 is a good price for what you get.
