Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

was thinking of adding a second light tube to the standerd juwel thank to have a go at a planted tank, however i came accross one with 2 tubes included on sale for 40 delivered was thinking it might be easier and just as cheap, its 5 cm wider than the reckord 70 lid so was wondering if anyone knows if this would be a good replacement and if the two bulbs included are suitable for planted tank or would i be better do a diy job on the origional lid. or im open to any other better solutions.

thanks
ronan

I think a lid 5 cm longer than the tank would look a bit carp! boom boom!

Puddlefish put up a thread a couple of months ago with detailed instructions for what you want to do... but I can't find it!

Rory's correct.....
In all likelihood it was a reply to someone else's plight as I cant remember where I posted it either.
So here it is again just for you!

Many Aquarists are familar with the Juwel brand of aquariums, Whilst these are fab kits, with all you need in one box, there is one major drawback with the hood if you want to grow aquatic plants, there is only one tube and not much room for another. Here follows a bit of a walkthrough on how I installed another within the limited space. see picture below..

The only room left is at the front, right before the feeding hatch so that choice is already made for us.

Here is a picture of all the equipment that you'll need to complete the upgrade. It consists of fluorescent light tube (your choice) starter unit, standard Juwel reflector, 2x thin threaded bolts and 2x black plastic screw-cups with caps.

A few tools are also needed and most people will have access to a drill & drill bit, screwdriver and a pair of pliers.

I started by carefully drilling two small holes in the reflector at each end, now place the reflector evenly in the front of the hood where you want it to go, using this as a template drill through the hood from the inside out. Now insert the bolts (mine were a bit long and needed to be cut to size, easily done with a junior hacksaw) through the holes in the reflector, through the hood and through your screw cups. Tighten the little nuts, snap the caps over the cups and you almost done.

A close-up of the bolts and screw-cups and caps.(available at any DIY store).

Fit your tube into the clips in the reflector, connect your starter unit to the tube and switch on. Job done!!!!

Here is a picture with the new tube inserted..

Here is a view from the top after modification (detatched from the tank)

Here is another view from the top (back on the tank) notice I have retained the space for feeding...

Here is the overall view.

I hope this will be of some help to owners of this type of aquarium setup who wish at some point to grow aquatic plants. This can be adapted to any of the Juwel range simply by purchasing the correct length of reflector. The whole project cost under £30.
Regards
C

I'm considering getting that double lid too.

It's really tempting, the DIY job is interesting but I'm worried about messing it up and frying my fish. I think it's only a 4cm hang and this would be at the front/back not side to side?

Has anyone bought one?

i guess your right

So here it is again just for you!

thank you, had seen ur diy example before and have decided to go that route. just ordered the starter bulb and reflector, worked out slightly more expensive then the €40 lid i think but not much.

also i ment to buy the arcedia starter but accidently ordered the wrong brand. i ordered an AquarLine one has anyone any experience of these, are they anygood? was too late to change when i realised id ordered the wrong one, was a few euros cheaper anyhow i think.

thanks
