Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
Maybe a silly question

Are the eheim air pumps quiet? I have an interpet and it is beginning to get on my nerves, I moved it off the cabinet and it is still noisy.
Thx

#1, (and this is quite a prevalent problem) the pump has an air filter (usually underneath) and this quite quickly becomes blocked. A rinse and dry can work wonders here (obviously with the filter having been removed firstly).
#2, Make sure some of the air output from the pump is vented so that not all the output (from each chamber if it has more than one) is going into the water. You would need a 'tee' airline union and a regulating valve to tap off any excess output. In other words, you shouldn't be letting all the air go into the filter/airstone but only using what is needed with the remainder being allowed to escape into the atmosphere.
#3, If the accessory (airstone/filter) has become a bit blocked that will put more back pressure on the pump, causing it to become more noisy. Try disconnecting the tubing from the pump and then blow through it yourself and see if there is much resistance. If there is you might want to try cleaning all the air tubing and connections with something like vinegar to help clear any blockages.
If it's an airstone causing the resistance it should be replaced.
Should all these options fail then a new pump might be your only solution.
As suggested, the Tetratec is pretty good and well behaved - as is the Eheim range.
Any further suggestions for Q?

I have an eheim running on my community tank and ya wouldn't hear it.....
The other 1 has been getting on my nerve for some time now, just other things have been more important than changing a noisy pump for the lastwhile........
I know they ain't expensive, but I don't really have money just to throw around at the moment!

definition ~ "one that is unplugged from the mains and is not touching off an air-pump that is plugged in".
The quietest air-pump that I had was a piston pump (big metal disc on it and all that).
So many "quiet" air-pumps have come and gone that ultimately it comes down to one thing: reliability and power (for the money).
The old Rena pumps are top.
Eheim....second division air-pumps that lack power and will become noisy.
Sera 4-ouput pumps are cheap, powerful and low noise. Great pump for the money. I have one 4 output Sera in the living room that is thrown on top of wires and plugs and all other sorts of junk and it is quiet (and is also powering air-driven protein skimmers, filters, brine-shrimp hatcheries).
The original question is not silly at all. And, as JohnH points out, the way a pump is anchored and used will also affect the noise.

There is one thing is their favour....and that one thing does make them a good pump in the end......they endure, and will keep a good flow even with age. They are also good at giving a nice flow rate even at varying depths of water.
I put them in the second division as they do not compete with piston pumps (or my Sera pump

Whereas some makes of pump are great when new, but once they start experiencing that slighlty clogged air-stone they start to go down hill very quickly. Not only that, once the depth of water starts to increase some pumps give up very quickly. They are in pub-lunch-break soccer league.
Actually, brand-wars is quite cool. Some brands used to be product leaders, but have gone hill quite a bit....yet still hang on to the fact of their lead in the 70s (sorry Tetra.....you're losing out)

It came with some air line but it is the plastic stuff.
If you have to get a pump and the filters aren't you getting close to JBL e901 price (€90) or is the decision more about function than price?
