Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys
I looking at getting a microscope to be able to make a diagnostic regarding diseases and parasites.
Was looking at getting the one that puddlefish reviewed www.irishfishkeepers.com/articles/14-tro...s-001-usb-microscope but unfortunatly the reviews on other websites were showing a lot of issues with it.
So i m looking at a more conventional microscope.
What type are you using guys and is it possible to take pictures through the lens ?

thanks

Around three years back Ian Millichip came to an ITFS meeting and gave us an informative talk about microscopes and their value to us aquatic-people.
He brought - and talked about - several types and from memory it was a very good talk.
I, personally, have one called BioLux AL (made by Bresser) which was the cheaper of the two models being sold in Lidl at the time. It was, as I recall, around €75

Multiplication is from 20x to 1280x and comes with both conventional eyepieces and a USB 'viewer', enabling one to see the results on a PC.

I'll not take it out and set it up, but here are a few snaps of the box - sadly I've mislaid the instructions, but it's fairly self explanatory.

I think this is, coincidentally, the same one as Ian was recommending too.

Microscopes - like most things are really a case of 'you get what you pay for', the other Bressler model Lidl were selling was double the price, but neither is a patch on something like a Leitz - costing well into the thousands, but for the sort of activities you (or any of us) needs to examine I think you'll not go far wrong with one of these (assuming they're still available).
Once again, the type Colin had reviewed was still pretty good - for the money.

It's a long way to Tipperary.

Thanks John
I will be more than happy with a microscope which magnifies by 40 for what i need to do with it as long as the picture is clear enough.
The one than Colin reviewed seems to be hit and miss with the software and a non existent customer support, so not ideal for an IT challenged person like me :hammer:

I think Maplin's sells those - or one very like it - and I've found that in general the assistants are both helpful and knowledgeable too, if you have a store in your vicinity it might be worth a look in.
