Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

on tfh on line there is an interesting article about fish show judging. it would be particularly valuable for anyone who intends to train as a judge. all the basic information and methods are well explained. most of the ideas and techniques i would be familiar with and have used through the years, and the five judging 20 point categories only differ slightly from the ifas system.
here in ireland in the 70's and 80's, we had as many as 15 judges available to show commitees. now we only have 2 / 3 and any illness etc. would spell disaster.
at present we have 2 very good new trainee judges, who are almost ready to sit the exam, but we need at least another 4 to bring numbers up and lighten the load on phil, martin and myself.
the criteria for any new candidate is;
be reasonably knowledgable re general fishkeeping;
be a member of a club, affiliated to the ifas;
have your application reccomended by club sec. and chairman;
anyway have a read of this article and see what u think.

any age requirements and number of years in hobby?

no set amount of years, just reasonable experience. working in the trade would be an asset, but not essential.

Finally got around to reading the article today, very interesting and they use virtually the same pointing system and categories as we do here under FBAS guidelines.
At a big show or in a big class the "eyeballing" is the way to go to ensure that the serious contenders get a thorough examination. We need more judges here to make the judging a less stressful and time consuming business. It would also be great to get feed back on the winning fishes to see what was good about the fish or what was "bad" about a fish that didn't place.
My only grief with the FBAS system is the size guide - half the fish you would expect to see in it are not listed at all. Why they can not produce a more comprehensive listing is beyond me.
I remember when I first experienced how the judging was done two years ago I was amazed at all the effort and time that went into each fish and all the paperwork. After so much effort getting your fish to the show and benching it, it is good to know that they will be fairly judged and given the attention they deserve.

the linc wont let me in it says its protected ,phil rang me to say he mailed it to me but unfortunatly the letter after j and before l on my computer is not worcing at moment [all my passwords have this letter init),
