Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Limescale
Talked to the boss (The wife)
and we are half thinking of getting a Water softner and a ro unit put in.Water softner for the limescale etc. and the Ro unit for drinking.Currently have to buy bottle water to drink so on the Ro units i seen so far once it is in place it will be cheaper to run than buying the water. Also and more important it is the first step towards my saltwater fishtank;)

Or what are to critical specs to look at to compare differeny brands?
If these units go in what effect will this have on my current tanks
Will i have to remineralise the water

Sorrt for all the questions but just want to fully understand what effects these units will have on my tanks brfore i go any further.

I use a water softener at home that feeds the water into the attic water tank, then I have mains water going to the kitchen sink, I then have an RO Unit under the kitchen sink with its own 10 litre tank that feeds my RO Tap which I use to fill the kettle, make soft drinks etc. I haven’t needed to change any of the filters in 18 months as you are not using the 50/100US Gallons a day. Before I installed the RO Unit I was only getting 10 days out of a Brita filter.
This way you can still use the mains water for your tank if you desire. This is just the way I do it..........Tom.

We were in the same position as yourselves with lime scale so we installed a watersoftener into the the attic,we have to add bags of salt to it every couple of months and it solved all of the lime scale problems,this does seem to leave a very slight taste of brine in the tap water( I dont notice other family members do),so i imagine you would have to go a step futher like tom and put a RO unit in under the sink....In our case because of the way our house was built,all the water pipes coming into the house comes up through the center of the house and it would have meant ripping up floors and digging trenches to run extra pipes we didnt bother so we tend to also use bottled water just for drinking. I would say tho be carefull about who you buy this equipment from, get a lot of quotes my sister got a water softener in as well 6 months before we did and paid twice what we paid also we had a guy out to the house last year who put on a great show for us like a magician....

I AM THE BOSSIf you use the large bucket method with aeration you mentioned, does this sort out your ph, kh and dh???
Do i only have to add the trace elements then to do water changes??

Like the idea of leaving one tap on the mains, no matter what system i go for i think i will do this just as a backup.Is there any way of testing to see when the RO filters need changing??? Will a tds meter do this???

Hope i find you well, as you said there are some price difference out there from vendor to vendor. Getting prices from 2600euros to about 600euros for a water softner system and a RO unit. Looking at the specs on each there does not seem to be that much of a difference between them to warrant this price difference.
Seen the "magicians" you mentioned on the tv awhile ago turning clear water brown and scamming a load of cash off people but there are always some people that get caught with these scams.

The simple way for me is when the lime scale starts to build up on the kettle it’s time to replace the cartridges.

Did you not know that dialup "IS" the new Broadband......
..Nope ...Still here in limbo...my Information superhighway is actually a boreen with grass growing in the middle....
