Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering would it be an idea to make a tutorials section on the website where the more experienced guys can post up the proper way to do things, ie. cycle tank ,placing substrate, planting palnts proper methods of adding fish etc. This way newer people can look up the tutorials section in stead of asking the same questions over and over again on the beginers section. It may even be of us to more advanced fish keepers too, who are looking for different or better ways to do things.Just a suggestion, let me know what ye think.

Cheers stuart.

Great idea Stuart but saying that if you use the search bar you should find what you need..

I'd say that most of the people who reply with help to various queries would always continue to answer individual queries, but it does become a pain to have written out the same thing 12 times to 12 different query posts.

How to get a series of balanced tutorials?....well that is another question as different people have differing opinions on 'best way'.

@ Spidermonkey.
Yes the search bar will locate any posts that u need info on , but to have a tutorial like you'd see on utube or even just a pictorial with explanations under each picture of what to do next would be fantastic.I know some people might say "yeah but who's gonna spend the time to make and post them?" But when you think of the time it takes to answer these same questions over and over again it might just be worth it.

@Ian,
It probably would come down to personal preference on the way things are done and "what is best practice" but surely if you make a video of lets say the basics in planting a feshwater aquarium.Give details on how things are done what substrate to use etc. A first timer then can just click on it give it a go and if they have any problems they can ask a question on the forum , where they can find the author of the video. If other people have differing opinions on the way to do same, then they can post their own tutorials or give opinions and comments underneath an existing one.

Hey it might not work but if it does I think it could be very helpful.

Cheers Stuart.
