Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

It seems some ill feeling might be on the horizon with this Karma scoring. Some people are already on negative numbers and this is an unfair method of publicly displaying a persons standing.I am just putting this out there for comment but it does seem a bit unfair to me.

Obviously the last call stands with Daragh so if you have an opinion on the matter state it here...

ChrisM,

The Karma thing is only a bit of fun, I'll remove it if it becomes abused or people enough people want it removed

Regards
Darragh

I fully agree with you Daragh, but it seems certain people have had their ego's hurt and are lashing out,in a petulant manner.
If thats what the karma is going to harvest is it worth it?

I really don't care but Chris has a point. Is there an option that shows who's dealing out the karmas scores? Ups, that might really open a can of worms

Ok Im going to speak my mind here...

We cant afford to lose good fishkeepers on this site or in the general hobby for that matter. This Karma thing is an unfair anonymous method of singling people out, even if they deserve it, it is wrong.

There are other methods of making people conform to rules and regulations and this is just a cheap shot.No matter how badly someone deserves it they shouldnt have to be publically humiliated.

I agree with Chris, anonymous feedback is rarely constructive and open to abuse.

I agree that it should be removed too.

It seems that it is already being used as a form of singling some people out.

I've seen the damage that these karma or reputation things can wreak on other forums. You don't see people on the high street going around with their karma points floating above their heads displaying to the whole world what people think of them. Mind you, I know Holger is thick skinned enough to not give a fish's tit about karma anyway. I'm not blaming Darragh for the karma thing as I know they come as standard in most forums these days.

Oh, all that means that I would like them removed too.

No doubt people can feel free to lower my karma now for saying tit. To coin a phrase \"Am I bothered though...\"

EDIT: DARRAGH POSTED & REMOVED KARMA WHILE I WAS TYPING THE ABOVE. THANKS DARRAGH.

Post edited by: richardbunn, at: 2007/07/28 00:46

Good move, it was too personal and did not add anything constructive.

On the top right of every post there was a thumbs up and thumbs down symbol that you could click to award or resmove one point for a posters Karma. It was getting a bit personal so it was suggested it should be removed.

There was for a short time a thumbs up or thumbs down symbol on the top right of each post, allowing readers to give karma points or take them away from the poster. It was seen as too personal and could be nasty. It was removed on request from several members.

I was enjoying the Karma.
But we have not evolved enough yet here to have something so
personal as negative Karma.
I was looking forward to dropping down the minus numbers but
because I am so nice my Karme kept going up.
