Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How about a section on recommended books, etc.. ? From general material for beginners through to more advanced/specialist stuff for specific subjects.

Or some sticky threads in all of the relevant forums might be another way to do this. And from the looks of it there's probably specific reading material available for a lot of the forums.

Hi Zing,
welcome on board. Good to see newbies coming up with some good suggestions.
There is some good information in the Articles section of the forum. This will be extended over time (I promised to do soemthing about discus for ages but don't seem to get around to it :( )Anything in particular you are looking for?

Holger

Nothing in particular but I've found myself browsing books on tropical fish/aquarium plants/etc.. in book stores and I'd sooner spend my money on recommended books rather than something with a shiny cover that turns out to be a load of ...

And I've plans for a ~120l (to fit a specific area) marine tank hopefully early next year and will definitely need to do some research first.

As I see it there's a lot of people on these forums with a lot of knowledge and many have I'm sure read various books on different aspects of fish keeping over the years so would be in a good position to tell us newbies what's worth a read and what's not.

Hi Zing,
sorry to be of no help as regards marines. really not my field.

The Baensch Aquarium Atlas books are pretty good for general reference.
There is one available on marine fish but I don't know if that is available in English.

The best book as far as South American dwarf cichlids are concerned is Roemer's cichlids atlas part 2.

On diseases, I would always recommend Untergasser's books. Maybe a bit dated but I am not aware of any better book available to the hobbyist.

Hi zing!

i have the Baensch vols 1-3 and find them a good starting reference for fish species. Also got some good stuff on plants but the tank maintanance section is a bit 'noddy'. If dwarf cichlids are your thing you'd be better off spending your budget on special books in that area. I've had a look through this www.mergus.com/cichlid_atlas_2.html and there's lots of good stuff on the various species of these little fellas!

Hope that helps....

I believe a book that every aquarist should have in their arsenal is 'The Manual of Fish Health' which is freely available from most aquatic supply stores.

or alternatively 'Handbook of Fish Diseases' by Untergasser and Axelrod. Personally I think it's the bible when it comes to Fish Health
