Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
I like this forum, however, I am missing a dedicated DIY section.
There are bits and pieces but nowhere to look specifically.
I'm sure we all do some DIY around our tanks either for the monetary aspect or the sheer lack of availabilty of certain things in the shops.

For example, I went out fto get a quote for a cabinet for my 200*60*50 tank. Needless to say remortgaging the house would have been an option to pay for it.
Decided to build my own from autoclaved concrete blocks. Covered these blocks with timber and it looks really good if I say so myself. And the whole thing cost me less than €150.
I'm not a DIY specialist, neither was I born with two left hands, all thumbs, but what I am talking about is stuff that would be within the capabilities of most of us.

Any thoughts on this?
Holger

That's a good idea.
I rekon we all have something to contribute.

I know I am constantly doing a McGyver on my tanks.

I know the feeling, my wife's just waiting for me to blow up the house while doing some wiring job on the fish tanks :D

likewise. I never knew you could do so much with rubber tubing. B&Q has a whole new meaning for me now...

Easy tiger! Do we really want to go there ? :D
Seriously, there's a whole lot of stuff in garden and DIY centres that can be converted to a use in aquariums. Gardena hoses and connections are great for filters and CO2

I agree.

I'm setting up a Rio 400 from scratch next week & I might document it as it may be some use to those starting off.

Also considering adding the famous "under gravel jets" (from the cichlid-forum) and one or two other bits and pieces.

that looks like the tank of the guy that wrote the article over on cichlid-forum. Never seen that video though - thanks a mill...

Dunno how mine are going to work out. His seem to be pumping water everywhere. I have two Eheim 1000lph pumps that I'm going to combine with a Y piece and have one on the same timer as the lights so the water movement will be less during "lights-out". Also thinking of running a T peice off the end of the Y piece and do some plumbing up and out of the tank. Means during water changes I can set the pumps to pump water out of the tank and not around it.

Hopefully it will work out. Sure I'll document it anyways....
