Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

In what context?
eg as a special section to be added, or as a subject of debate?

If it's a debate, then I'm up for it.

If it's a suggestion on a special section, then I have no opinion.

As Ian says, is this the start of a debate?
If not - why not make it into one? - I'm sure there are plenty of members with opinions on it...as you suggest the subject has arisen before but not recently, so work away.
So far as the Forum goes there is nothing hard and fast set down either way, but for me (very personally) I think there should be no room for them in the hobby, we really are the custodians of many Fish close to, or indeed already on, the list of extinct - or very nearly extinct - species and we really should be doing our very best to retain the integrity of those which remain in our charges.
The Victorian Cichlids are a group of very endangered Fish which spring immediately to mind, but the dreadful ruination of natural habitats across the tropical areas in Asia and South (and even Central) America are wiping out Fish species by the day.
So, it's my belief that hybridisation should be avoided at all costs.
Again, I stress that is the personal view of JohnH the Forum member and not JohnH the Forum administrator.

More opinions invited (please).

John

I think that the last post on this was actually a post on in-breeding, but it turned into a hybrid post (if my memory serves me well).

It is true that many fish may form hybrids in nature....but then that also questions the validity of species descriptions and is it an inter-species, or inter-generic, or simply a inter-natural-morphotype hybrid?

It is also true that certain hybrids show heterosis (what is called 'hybrid vigour'). But the problem with that is that some mau think that all hybrids have 'hybrid vigour' by default.

I have discussed this to quite an extent on the reptile forums.

There may exist a potential for producing stunning animals....but that stunningness may be quite short-sighted.

In general, I'm not a fan of hybrids.....but that also depends on what one defines a hybrid as.

I'll give some page space for others to give opinions.

i think there should be no room for hybrids on this forum as i think this will make people think about buying these unnatural fish, they are a danger to the hobby,i do think that any thread promoting hybrids should be closed, maybe a vote on this would work out the best,i would vote yes to ban threads on hybrids and dyed fish too...
