Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Would it be worth considering or having a pinned thread within tropical plants giving pictures as well as names of tropical plant spieces along with some of the most common non tropical plants that you likly to find within your LFS

I am sure some of the sponsors or more experianced fish keepers could help compile a list

Regards

Sorry I didn't reply any earlier on that one.

It could be an idea - what do others think ?

Tropica have a nice section on their website about plants and have their catalog online too. ( here ) That might be of help.

Valerie :)

Absolutely, lessens chances of buying the wrong Plants for the wrong situation. It would be good to have the experience of members available rather than depending on specialist websites abounding in superlatives and professionally finished tanks, go for it I say.

I could post some very descriptive accounts/pictures of blanket weed, I'm famous for cultivating it - even without trying!

LOL JohnH !!!

David suggested the following website also for identifying plants. That might also be a good tool for plants :

www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plantfinder/index.php

Thanks David.

with the exception of missing stuff like blyx japonica etc , tropica has a brilliant catalogue of plants to scroll through and i would recommend buying their new book ( its only 3e! ) and also as stated above aquatic plant central similarly so it would be tough compiling a list on thier standards rather than just linking it , perhaps posts on newest plant introductions as tropica and many others are on constant plant expeditions!! :cheer:

For what it is worth i tink a picture index on plants would be great having links is a wonderfull idea but if you already have the plants or looking at plants in your LFS and dont know what they are called its kinda pointless.

Plant ID doesn't work on the basis of a generalisation of appearence, the method by which Plants are identified is by Leaf structure, assosciation of structures etc, you can have a picture to give a first look identification aid , then you can choose things like leaf shape, how the leaf is arranged around the stem, whether the leaf is compound, sessile, obovate, dentate etc etc etc, I really think a comprehensive list could be organised and kept as reference for members which can be added to as new plants are discovered by members or specialist suppliers.
