Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys i m having an issue with the sansibar sand as it increases my ph.
I bought it because i m keeping pygmy corys and a electric blue ram pair in the tank.
Could someone recommend a different substrate wich wouldnt affect my parameters.
Thank you
Anthony

Hi anto
Are you sure it's the sand?
I have the same in a Cory tank with out any issues,
What water do you use? Rain, tap,ro?
Bogwood will help keep it down

Yup it is the sand.
I putted some of it with tap water the ph increases by .6 overnight an tds up by 20.
I had tap water only in another glass tds stayed the same and ph up by .3.
Everytime i tried to bring the ph down in the tank with ro it bounced back up.
My tap water is ph6 kh3 gh6 and i ended with ph 7.8 kh8 gh 8 in the tank water.
That s why i want to use another substrate.
Thanks
Anthony

How long is the tank itself running?
Also the fact that your tap water is slightly acidic
It may be having an affect on the sand
Although in saying that, Zanzibar is supposed the to be inert

The tank has bren running for 3 months now.
I thought it was inert too.
I contacted the fish shop who sold it to me and he was surprised as he uses it in his discuss tank. He proposed to exchange it wich is nice of thim but i m afraid to get the same sand and having the same problem.
What else can i use for dwarf corys ?
Thanks
Anthony

You can use anything you want tbh,
You may end up with the same problem,
The ph you have them at at the minute isn't going to kill them,
You should concentrate on keeping the ph stable rather than aiming for a certain range,
If you stabilize it for a couple of weeks with what you have
I.e sand + water
Then look at bringing it down with bogwood,ro and rainwater
But remember to use your tap water mixture to buffer your water column.
