Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How to clean a Blau Overflow box

Hey there again

Most of you probably already tried this but I will just post it anyway in case some of you dont!

so I was cleaning day today. It has been a few weeks since I shutdown (or moved) my nano marine tank.

I had already cleaned most of the stuff, the only thing left was my overflow which was absolutely covered with all kind of disgusting stuff.

I let the overflow box dry for a few weeks so today, when I have finally decided to go for it, I realized that it was going to be harder than I thought.

The funny thing is that it was so dirty that I never though I would be able to clean it and put it up for sale... so I dont have any pictures of the dirty overflow

Closest I could find was this one

Well now imagine one 10 times dirtier (mine didnt have too much coraline algae but mostly sticky brownish fluffy stuff like the one found at the bottom of a dirty sump)

So after a bit of scrubbing I was able to remove most of the stuff on the sides but I couldnt reach the inside of the overflow. I was able to stick a brush in it but still it wasnt good enough to do the job. Not even hot water would do the trick.

After a bit of thinking I decided to try something

So I filled up the side of the overflow, added bleach, baking soda and hot water. Tilt the overflow so the water would go into the overflow box and shook it a bit.

In a few seconds the overflow went from being covered with dirt to this

So I repeated the process one more time but this time let it soaked for 5 minutes

Left if there for 5 minutes and then shook it well for a few seconds.

The result after washing out most of the bleach/soda with tap water was this

Hope this helps someone, the main drawback is that you cannot do this if you are using the overflow (as normal maintenance) but otherwise I dont see any issues... unless someone says otherwise of course...
