Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Is Tech 7 good enough to use to replace a front glass panel on a 3ft fish tank has anyone used better ?
I am reading mixed opinions about Tech 7 even though i used myself on a 4 ft sump bottom glass without any problems.
what's your thoughts any info will be great.

Some tech 7 is aquarium safe
Some is not

Tech 7 has been used to stick nearly everything for me at 1 stage or another! Even stuck a lads bicycle to a wall with it one day in work out of boredom (funniest thing I've ever seen!!!!!!)

The aquatic safe tube has a fish symbol on it.
I recall it not being suitable for a tank as it doesnt have enough grab as its a polymer and not a silicone ?
It can be used for repairs or patch work but not as the main seal product.
Theres a glazing silicone thats suitable in Woodies.

From what I've read on tech7 it remains slightly flexible so the front glass may be able to move a little, better to use aquarium silicone, it's made for the job.

From what I can remember the glazing silicone in woodies has some green colour on it. It also says Dow Corning in small writing somewhere on the back.
It used to say aquarium safe before they changed the writing to cover them on insurance.

I would be under the impression tech7 would be stronger than silicone but I'm not certain

forget the tec 7. it will not work to hold a front panel in place go with silicone such as aquamate as mentioned above, i have used tec 7 for lots of different aquarium applications such as sealing a leak from the inside of the tank with the water still in it, but it will not hold a front pane in place.
recently i was switching around a tanks decor for some new fish that i had arriving and removing some of the rocks, caves etc the caves were made from old pill bottles , coated in silicone and rolled in sand and gravel then came across one that i had rolled in tec 7, the sand was mostly gone from it, when i picked it out of the tank the tec 7 had disintegrated and was crumbling away between my fingers, these were around two years in the tank
silicone all the way!

hi ,as a motor mercanic we use quite a bit of tech 7 , it is a brilliant sealer for gaskets etc being oil and fuel tolerant and has a high temperature range ,it does remain slightly flexible once it hardens so not suitable for replacing glass panels on a tank particully on a big tank . it is completely fish safe this I confirmed with their customer services ,I have used it for sealing on my koi pond plumbing with great results ,one very good feature is this product will set underwater .
