Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Has anyone come across these? cgi.ebay.ie/External-Aquarium-Fishtank-F...Z46310QQcmdZViewItem

I can't get over the price.

Their pond airpumps (I'm thinking fish house...) are excellent prices too.

I've bought from this crowd several times before & they were brilliant.

Never heard of them. I'd doubt if it will stay at that price as there's 5 days to go. I'm always dubious of substantial items listed at 99p as they always seem to attract bids. If I was cynical, I'd say that the seller was bidding on their own item to ensure they get a good price. This is very possible and very difficult to eBay to detect.

In my view, if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is. I stay with quality when it comes tofilters and heaters. Firstly, they keep the fish alive. Secondly, a leak from an external filter would be pretty disasterous.

Regards,

Ken.

I suddenly realised I was getting overexcited at the price including postage

Actually the best heater I've got came from them for next to nothing.

Might as well give them a try if you get it for cheap. Looks like one of the older style Eheim filters but a lot more energy efficient. I bought filters of ebay in Germany before. The one I got for my bother-in-law came with a 4 (yes, four) year warranty. It's been running for 2 years now. The emdia that came with it is quite good and including delivery and a 200w heater stat it came for less than 100€

Got my fluval 405 (for my Rio 400) delivered to my desk in work for €138.
And I could have gone cheaper, like second hand.

Ebay pretty much beats the pants off retailers here for this kind of stuff.
They just can't compete.

Now I'm going to buy another one (very impressed with the 405, its magic!) for my Rio 240.

I buy pretty much all my aquarium stuff off ebay.
Recently I've spent €60 for 2kg of Spectrum cichlid food from the US.
€30 for a fluval 4plus (great filter for its size, easily beats the pants off the jewel crap). And a Record 60 plus stand for €150. (not for me)

I would take the Juwel filter over the Fluval any day, but that's becuase it's better for my planted setups. Lower turnover, less surface agitation & a lot more media capacity. Easier to put other media in too.

Mind you, I'm not a fan of internals anyhow but you can't always be laying out money for externals.
