CO2 bottle - where to refill it?

Success!!! I found a place 15 km far from me in Tagoat! They have technical CO2 but I hope it won't make any difference to my fish and plants!!

So at the moment we have following addresses:

To give an update on Doyle and Doyle Wholesales. I had to fill my bottles the other day. They now have a fixed price list (last time they seemed to pull a price out of thier head!). Recession must be hitting them hard, prices are up! €25 for a 2kg and 5kg bottle, both same price, and to buy new both are €50.

i will try to call into them tomorrow or friday and find out better details, i'm sure its welding gases so dont know if there will be argon in the filling tank but will ask all the q's and get prices and address

Thanks, will look forward to hearing from you. There are 2 CO2 used for welding: one pure CO2 without any additives (this is what we need for our tanks) and another mixed with argon (tank extermination). They should have both in their offer.

a good point as this should be an ongoing and updated topic. although your observation of more new posts re: planted tanks is valid, a few i have noticed since revisiting the forum after a few months, is that people are talking about "walstad" [sp?] method planted aquariums, which require very little care, ergo very little runnign costs, and negates the need for injected co2

the method, in principal, is a good idea but in a closed environment and using very rich soils has me worried. the fish generally are not from the regions where the peat soils are from. even with a bit of fertile aquarium soils in my tank, plant growth exploded for the first few months, even with regular large water changes the algae came and went in all forms and colours it was a total pain in the hole. now, after a year or so, it has settled to where i need to do very few and very small water changes and everything is stable. but thats a 500l system where a small change has little effect. in smaller systems, a small change will have a bigger impact on water chemistry/quality and fish health

Yes we can do the refills for CO2. I just want to give a bit of experience that I have had with CO2.
I have been told that there are the 2 grades of CO2. Food grade - that we want for our fish tanks - this is also the Co2 you get at the pubs because we drink it to make our Coke have bubbles. Also the welder Co2 which can be harmful for aquariums and not to be used for the coke machines. I have not had any experience with people using the second welders gas in Aquariums so can not verify that this is true or not.

BOC do have the expensive annual charge, which as much as I do not like to pay for it - it has to be done. This includes bottle rental (large bottles) which we have at Seahorse for CO2 and also compressed Oxygen which we use when shipping out web orders (fish can survive 48 Hours when used - as long as they are kept warm.)

We have customer who bring us the pub CO2 bottles and we refill these no problem. We do however have problems with older tanks that have no stamps to verify that they have been pressure checked.
The way it works is as follows,

From new you get 10 years from the original stamp, which will give you the build date of your cylinder. After this it will need a pressure test and will be re-stamped to verify that a pressure test has been done. After this there is a pressure test needed every 5 years.

A pressure test will cost you €20. In this the cylinder is open up, checked inside and then rebuilt with new O-rings. Then it is pressure tested and stamped with the date - then it's good to go for 5 years of refilling.

Only once I have come across a bottle with a different than normal fitting and we had to make a customised fitting with chewing gum to fill the cylinder with gas. (very hi-tech)

Seahorse Aquarium will fill any size bottle for €20. It is not done on the spot but will be done in a few days. If you are a hard core plant enthusiast or heavy calcium reactor user, you will have 2 bottles so you have the hot swap available for when the other runs out.

They will refill on the spot. In the light of new info about CO2 (see above post from seahorse), don't know what type of CO2 ddwholesale are using, but mention to them that you're going to use the CO2 for a fish tank and they will fill it with (allegedly) the proper type.

They use Food grade Co2 same as for beer or coca cola

I asked for additional cylinders.
Lad offered me 5 kg cylinder from fire extinguisher, I paid only for gas and got a free cylinder.

Where is the best place (ie chepest) to buy a CO2 tank in the Dublin area? I'm also looking for a regulator. Anyone bought anything cheap recently?

What size CO2 tank is best suited for a 450l tank?

I'm not looking to use an extinguisher.

There is no specific cylinder size or capacity. It depends on the usage. The bigger the better but just consider an ugly more than a meter high cylinder in your living-room. In my opinion the best is the one you can put into the fish tank stand. Don't go into 0.5 kg bottles - too small, too expensive refilling.

My CO2 has been design for planted tanks - cylinder is 2.5 kg.

I was very satisfied with it, the result were georgeous and it is difficult decision to sell it but due to electicity cost I am withdrowing from HiTech fish tank and I am going into low tech. It is enough for me to pay for filter and heater working all the time. I do not have lighting and use only sun-light for my tank. Plants are not growing so rapidly but they still grow and I have to cut them every month. Fish seems to be happier because I do not fertilize the tank and pseudomugil gertrudae started to breed...
