Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

So i rushed into buying a couple of things for my tank that im not that happy with, one being the return pump from the sump, second the air pump. The return pump is a hydor seltz L40,the vibration from it is very loud. Im looking into replacing that with a Eheim Universal Rotary Pump 1260.Now the air pump is a Sera precision, which said extremely quiet on the box but its extremely loud, so wanted to replace this with the eheim air pump 3704. What do yous reckon lads, wanna get these on the list for Santa

I have a Eheim 200 airpump and find it very quiet, twin outlet and has adjustable flow to each output. The 3704 would be based on the same type of design I think so Id recommend it from the fact the 200 is ideal.

Yeah i have two eheim 3704s and they are really quiet. As for the eheim rotary pump u get what u pay for and that is an expensive pump compared to others. Eheim are great quality and are workhorses.

Mick...:)

does your return pump have the rubber sucker feet? and is the return pipe touching anything on its way up to the tank? try beeding the pump on floss or foam if its not got feet

Pump is on suction cups and the hose isnt in contact with anything, im gonna order the eheim pump and see if it makes a difference, need a back up either way. And also thinking of adding a external filter with spray bar and maybe scrap the air pump altogether

exactly what i have planned myself, but even better than that, get an overpowered return pump and run a spray bar off that... just fill the sump to the brim with ceramic and lighten the sponge/floss or use a sump sock, to allow the extra flow without the sump buggering itself up

Probably a bit late now, but I only just read a post on the Hydor pump. It was making noise and the rep sent out a washer (1 or 2) for the impellar/rotor. There was a manufacturing fault in one of the designs. There is an old design and a newer one. One type has a conical part while the other is square. The rep just asked which type it was and knew straight away. Thats all I can remember

Found it again

My Koralia 1 was noisey until the rep.sent me the two washers free of charge. Now it is VERY quiet.Check out the thread on "rattling Koralia".If the propellor is conical shaped it needs the washer,if it is square ,apparently it doesn't.This is on recent models, mine was bought from BLUZOO. 4 weeks ago.Manufacturing fault.Steve.

I've just discovered your problem myself.
I bought a hydor L30 and the damn thing makes more noise than the Eheim 1250 it was to replace.
That could have gone towards and external filter to solve the problem.
