Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I was just wondering if when you give away fish for free are you entitled to have an issue if this person then sells the fish on or is it any of your business what they do with them. I would be interested to hear others opinions on this?

I have to agree Jim,
I wouldn't be best pleased either. Unfortunately it is not possible to 'vet' members and as such a few fall 'through the net' (another bad pun - sorry again).
But...at then end of the day there is no Rule in the rules and guidelines to prevent this happening so it really is down to the conscience of the person concerned.
My guess is he/she isn't over-endowed with morals.
So - by the letter of the 'law' there's nothing which can be done to curtail this sort of underhand activity and - as suggested in a previous thread - we should all just be cautious who we give or sell stuff to.
John
Edit,
By saying what I have here I'm presupposing that the person took the free fish with the intention to sell them on for a profit, it's a different matter entirely if the person took them and at a later date decided they no longer wanted them - but, even then, the 'decent' thing would have been to have also given them for free to the next recipient.

When we give or sell our charges , we can only hope they will be given the best of care, it is all we can hope for.
Once you give or sell Fish to someone, what they decide to do is none of anyone else's business.
I wonder how many of us who have given or sold fish to someone , know where they are today. To expend any energy wondering is time seriously wasted! Lots more important stuff going on in the World right now.
If someone takes free Fish and sells them on, it's fair game. There are people who have pets for years that they suddenly, through no fault of their own, have to move on, you cannot keep wondering where they are or what has happened to them.

You sell the Fish, there ends your ownership. Anything after the transaction is the new owners business.
If the new owner passes them on to someone for free and he in turn does the same, the circle could go on ad infinitum, it has to reach a point of common sense.

What if you gave the reciever free fish yet the receiver had plenty more fish at home so a few weeks down the line they gave away a few SHOP BOUGHT FISH making abit of room for free.... would it be so bad then to sell fish ye may have recieved for free previously? If the good deed is being passed on in some way shape or form what does it matter?
Btw that was a fabricated scenario but still worth discussing I think considering its relevance.

I also do think that context is important. If someone kept on saying 'yep, I'll take the free fish that are being offered' and then kept on selling them, that's not on, at least in my opinion. But if someone got some free fish and then circumstances changed, that's a different story.
Also, fair play to James for publically explaining himself when he doesn't really need to. Firstly, his explanation shows that he was in no way accepting free fish with the idea of profiting from them. And I also believe the fact that he wanted to explain himself shows that he had no ulterior motive.

I kinda agree with the basic point that if you give something away, or sell it, then what happens afterwards isn't your concern really, you've given up any right to the item or what happens to it.

Jaysus Jim what's the craic, could you of not just sent the chap a text or phone call (assuming you have his number) or even a PM on here and ask the guy what's going on? Again 'assuming' it's James you are aiming this post at,why would you feel the need to air your annoyance on a public Fish forum? Hope you all kiss and make up lads though.
Ger

fully agree with ger. A pack of smokes, 2 pints, cheap haif cut, all a tenner. I know its a point of principle but lets keep it in proportion.Jaysus Jim what's the craic, could you of not just sent the chap a text or phone call (assuming you have his number) or even a PM on here and ask the guy what's going on? James I really wasn't referring to anything you had done, I seen your post and had forgotten that I had given you the bala shark when you collected the barbs. Honest it was a question I was pondering based on another source I had been reading.
jim
That's on Jim I do understand what your saying it is not right for people to sell something they got for free it
Should be passed on for free again. I know in my case I was trying to get back up and running with my tank and cichlids
It's still not easy to manage and I am going to sell a few more things to fund my next project don't worry I won't be selling any fish.
Yours are doing great and my friend has a nice setup with the barbs and few other fish in one tank and the sharks are in a seperate tank by them self.
