Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am posting this in the hope of some advice - really hoping that one of our Members has any knowledge of Inkjet Printers and their foibles.
I have an Epson Stylus printer - quite the 'ultimate' A4 model when I bought it, probably 6 or 7 years ago now.
It worked pretty well for the time I used it - but has sat there unused, on its shelf, for probably getting on for three years.
Long enough I would suspect, for the ink to have dried out and blocked up the printhead - this happened to a previous Canon printer which became unuseable - and that was only 'dormant' for a few months.
So, I'm wondering, is it beyond hope too, or is there a way of unclogging the printhead?
It doesn't appear to be able to be removed as the Canon's printhead could be.
I hasten to add that I've long since lost the manual.
Any help or suggestions (other than scrap it and buy a new one - that's plan B ) would be gratefully welcome.
John

Hi John
Try and get your hands on a spray can of IPA (Iso Propyl Alcohol )and spray it in and around the head it may be enough to unclog the heads,if they do unclog be prepared to waste a lot of ink getting it to print again properly....Hope this helps.

Darren this would only make the blockage worse as the head gets blocked as a result of the solvents dissolving from the ink in the first place.

I was just looking at a product called 'Magic Bullet' cleaner on YouTube. If you Google it, you will also get reviews etc. It's available from Amazon uk. Just might be the answer! It apparently works on Epson & Canon desktops. I know you're not into these 'potions' but....

Most of the better manufacturers have their manuals available online, just google your model and 'manual'.I had a look and Epson have them there, but I don't know your model.
I imagine those products mentioned should do the trick, but theres nothing more annoying than spending money on such repair products, only for them not to do the particular job you wanted them to.
Something tells me this problem may not be covered in the manual though, but as it's free, give it a go first.

If its not an overly expensive printer id just buy a new one was looking around for a good one myself recently and seen a nice Cannon for E50 inc ink remember you may have to replace the ink cartridges in your old printer and it can work out the same price as buying a new one.

Hi John,

All you probably need is to insert new ink jet cartidges. The ink in the old ones will be hard. However just go out and buy a new printer. It's cheaper than buying the ink anyway and the new printer will come with ink.(printer manufacturers actually sell prints below cost and rely on you coming back over and over for expensive inks to make their money)

you'll get a cheap printer with ink for as little as € 50. It'll also be new, fast, under warranty and reliable. It'll have a built in scanner and maybe a fax. It'll have drivers for up to date windows software. The quality of pictures it prints will be better and it'll be quieter. You're going to have to buy new cartiges anyway so it's a no brainer. The shop even have to dump the old printer for you when you buy a new one.

Here's Hewlett Packard one that's a printer and scanner in 1. PC World. They only have a UK price on the web but it should be about €50 in store.

Thats another thing the manufacturers copped onto. The ink crtridges you now get with a new printer are actually a lot less volume of ink than the ones you buy as replacements.
But yes, printers are now very cheap,I think I saw one in DID today for 40e.

And I've always bought cartridges(and anything photographic/computer) from here

I got an Epsom Stylus
Decent printer for the price, Avoid HP&Lexmark printers like a plague.

Your cartridges are bad. They dry out pretty fast after being opened. 10 weeks or less, especially if not in use.

When new cartridges are installed it will take a few prints to clear crap as fresh ink will help free things up. Should be grand.

Thanks to everyone who replied - I'll look into it better tomorrow, but perhaps plan B might be the easier option

Cheers,
