Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello

I'm new here so just dropping in here to introduce myself.

My name is Kevin, getting a fairly basic tropical set up going (see attached pic). I have a 54 litre tank with a fluval u2 filter, a few plants, piece of bog wood and two ornaments: a divers helmut and pillars.

Set it up about 5 weeks ago. No fish yet - I've just been letting everything settle down and get used to water changes and that. All going very well and should be populating it soon with a few fish.

After having goldfish as a child and inevitably doing it so completely wrong, I decided that I'd give it another shot. Except this time I did a lot of homework (online and bought a book) before I did anything. Also went to a very good fish shop and got some great advise. Again did nothing. Thought more and decided what I wanted and then went back and got what I have now. When I first got the idea to get back into this I figured I'd get a few fish in a small tank and that'd be fine. Obviously through doing my homework I know there's a lot more involved. So the idea has evolved since then and now I have the 54l tank as I said - I know it's not massive but I reckon it's not a bad place to start.

So I'll be in beginner haven with some Qs.

Thanks guys.

sean: yeah the plants are real - no idea what they are but I've got a variety. Also I've got a biological co2 system. I have a nice fine substrate and below that I have some sort of soil type stuff as food for the plants. So far they're not doing too badly.. I've removed anything that didn't look great, did some replanting of fresh shoots and currently everything in there is green haha.

As for questions about stocking I've just left a topic in beginners haven called "New set up: hard alkaline water" so you can drop in there for more detail.

But basically my water is hard and alkaline. I want fish that will suit those conditions. I was thinking of starting off with about 4 guppies (1m, 3f).
