Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all!

Just recently been made aware of this forum, great to see a local site! I've been a long time member of several of the UK based sites.

I'm Conor, based in Belfast. I've been keeping tanks for about 5 years or so now. The hobby for me very quickly grew from standard community tank, to a few plants, into full blown high tech planted tanks. I work in IT, so I think it is my inner nerd egging me on!

I currently have 4 tanks (really only "allowed" 3 max though!).

I have 2, 35L arcadia arc tanks, 2 are low tech planted tanks used for breeding sakura red cherry shrimp, and the other for celestial pearl danios.

My 3rd tank is a small (~30L) Diane Walstad inspired natural tank, soil substrate capped with argos play sand. Its been going for about 2 years now, and only ever gets topped up with water. Shows no signs of algae, has only cherry shrimp, and a lot of plants!

My main tank is a 110L display tank, I run it high tech, with daily ferts dosing. Occassional bit of greenspot algae on the glass, but thats it! Plants are E Tenellus carpet, Java fern, Trident fern, P Stellata, Limnophila Aromatica, Pennywort, and Christmas moss. Fauna is 11 ember tetras, 14 celestial pearl danios, female peacock goby, male and female dwarf honey gouramis, and lots of cherry shrimp.
Running a fluval 405 (rated at 1200l/hr), 2x24w t5 luminaire, regulator/solenoid to fit co2 fire extinguisher, diy clear (when cleaned!) spraybar, and a UP inline co2 atomizer. Substrate is akadama (bonsai soil), due to its excellent CEC properties.

Uploaded 4 photos, tank is slighly overgrown currently!

Will be moving house in the next 6 months, so already planning ahead! We currently live in a terrace house, hence the small tanks, however I'm keeping an eye out for 300L+ tanks, and would like to experiment with a continuous water changing system, amongst other diy projects.

Welcome Conor; you do seem to have much experience already through the running of your few tanks. Looking forward to some pictures. Good luck with the move.

Regards;
Andrew

Hi Omen,
Welcome to the forum. It's not usually quite so heated, but I'm sure you'll find some great help and advice on here, as well as helping others with your planted tank experience. Any photos of your planted setups? It's almost obligatory!

Welcome Conor.

We have some great aquatic retailers here in Dublin. I'm interested to know how we compare to your typical lfs up north.
Have been to Grosvenor in Lisburn and was quite impressed.

Enjoy the forum pal

Also see you're plant fan. Maybe could you do a step-by-step outline guide to the Diana Walstad method sonetime. I know there are links and a thread already on that recently, but a first hand experience guide is better than a link.

Bit confused, have been trying to upload some photos today, and it seems like they are being submitted as the website takes a while to reload once submitted, however they don't appear, nor does any text? Do I need to host the photos with an online resource? I've only been trying to directly upload to the site from my PC. I'm sure this is something simple.... I'm working night shifts this week, so I am a bit dumb currently

I'd suggest using something like photobucket hosting site(not necessarily saying 'photobucket' itself as it has become a bit crappy in recent times).
There is an upload limit to the forum....I'm not too sure what it is, but I have had a few problems when trying to upload PDF files.
