Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a quick hello. I have had a 180ltr corner tank for about six years. Up to now really just to look at but have developed a keen interest over time. I would like to get a bigger tank in the not to distant future so am keen to learn a lot more before taking the plunge.
I have only had plastic plants until recently but have started to replace some to gain a bit of experience as I would like to go completely to real in the next tank.
From what I have seen you have a great resource here and I hope too get to know everyone as we go and I apologize in advance for any stupid questions of which I'm sure there will be plenty.
Cheers, Reggy.....

You're very welcome.
I see you got the message about pictures - fear not, you'll probably be asked for more!
When you do get your new tank always a nice idea is for a graphic account of the set-up from start to completion.

I'll definitely do that John, it'll be a while though, I have a lot to learn about managing the stability of my tank. As I said I have started changing out my plastic plants and I also made a trip to Seahorse on Saturday last.
We have the good fortune to have our own well water which is very clean and untreated, the downside though is it is very hard water and I have been wanting to find a non additive way of softening the water consistently. I decided to go with replacing one of the filter pads with peat pellets. I know some people don't like the amber tint in the water, personally I like it and IMHO think it looks very natural for a river themed tank.
It's early days yet but the hardness is already dropping. I will test each evening for a while and when I have some data will post the results if people would be interested.
Just an off the cuff observation but the fish already seem much more active throughout the day and all species seem to spend a lot more time moving between the different areas and depths in the tank.
Cheers

I'm with you on the amber tint. Of my three tanks, two have it; one just a tinge and the other is like weak tea. The tank without any tint looks washed out by comparison.
My feelings exactly. Great in most Amazonian setups, and the fish show better colours too!

Yeah your spot on Sheag35, particle filter straight after the pump but no other treatment. Thought about RO alright but went with the peat as much for a learning experience as anything. Had also thought of rainwater as some of the guys here use... just had that niggling feeling I should run it through a UV unit if it was standing for any length of time.
Cheers

no need for a uv just run an airline with an air stone into it that will keep it fresh andif you wanted a mature sponge filter is more than enough
