Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New (to Ireland): Restarting after 10 years

Hello! My name is Chris, originally from California. I started keeping tropical fish as a kid, then tried brackish water, and cichlids, before eventually graduating to salt water. As a teen I became "the fish guy" at my local pet shop.

After college I bought a 100gal and restarted a salt water tank which led to lps and ultimately sps corals and clams. I used to be mad in to corals and grew a few rare species. I grew an 18" red montipora from just a small frag. I then bought my dream tank, a custom 150gal which I ended up selling due to my move to Ireland 10 years ago.

So last week my cat Jerry died and, as a way to distract me, my wife suggested we get a tank for the kids. I couldn't stand a cheap SpongeBob tank and settled on an AquaNano 40 and cabinet which I just set up this Wed. It's been a loooong time since I had tropical fish so I'll be looking forward to talking with some of you for help and advice.

PS: Here is my old tank's website is www.livinglava.com

Chris, firstly welcome to the Forum.
I just looked at the site, the link for which you added to your post.
I got a warning from a virus checker that something was trying to put something on my computer from it. Now, I know very little about this sort of thing, but has your site possibly been compromised?

No, it's just the java required for the lavalamp graphic is so old its not the recommended anymore. That site hasn't been updated in many years so it's simply that it's old. This link bypasses the frame with the menu and java header and still gives a good idea: lava.lounge111.net/reef_main.htm

That's great - as I say I'm a bit of a 'no-hoper' with computers so thought it was best to mention it - just in case it was something sinister.
