Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello, I joined there a few weeks ago and wondering how long I will be on probation? Or does everyones posts have to be checked by a mod?

Since i joined the website is very slow, its like being on dial up back in 1999.

I came to this forum looking for good suppliers for Discus and Ive spent good money on a few of the forums sponsors, so it is worthwhile for sponsors to be here

I bring 16 years of experience keeping Discus, but the slowness and my posts not posting for days makes it hard to keep visiting.

Is it just me or is this how the forum just works? Ive been on another discus site since 2002 and it shouldnt be this hard. I posted a question to a sponsors forum, planning to spend a few 100 quid this weekend but my post hasnt posted yet, so I guess they are out of luck?

I would like to contribute and get to know everyone but its not exactly user friendly, thats just my 2 pence.

Thanks, Ken

There was a technical blip (I do not personally know the exact details) with the forum here a short while ago.

Hi Ken,
Like Ian said it was a technical blip which all the members here found it hard to log on!
There's a thread there to show your not the only one,
I find the forum quite helpful and if you persevere I'm sure you'll get sorted,
What's ment for you won't pass you by :)
Btw welcome to the forum.......
There's a few lads selling nice discus here also.

Hi Ken, sorry to hear your first experience of the forum was not so positive but like Ian said there was a technical problem somewhere in cyberspace. There's a few specialist discus breeders here so you're in good company. BTW first price for the august photo competition is some lovely young discus, a chance for you to aquire good fish, you have to win first :P .

The reason for the delay in your (and, for the time being all new members’) posts are being delayed prior to publication is that we have been plagued of late by spammers and the like who have somehow managed to infiltrate the Forum, having somehow by-passed the sign-up process. It has been decided therefore, that the facility for getting all posts for the first fifteen submissions from all new members checked and vetted, if necessary has had to be instigated, thus giving us the opportunity of making certain that said newcomers are genuine and sincere people – rather than those who would want to do it no good.

Like the lads have said, there has been some ‘behind-the-scenes’ difficulties in recent times which has caused the Forum to all-but ‘grind to a halt’ but hopefully these are now well and truly in the past.

It’s a pity, Ken, that your 'difficulties' here so far might cause us to lose your membership, along with it your 16-year experience with Discus but really the choice is up to you.
We have lost some members as a result of the ‘blips’ but thankfully enough have stuck with us through the difficult times to give a nucleus from which to re-build a firm membership base.

On a different note, I personally have had very little in the way of response(s) to posts asking questions of Sponsors using their Sections, I think the best (and probably only) positive way to contact them is by telephone.

Welcome to the forum, hope things start going a bit more smoothly for you now. I'm sure the current discus keepers would be happy to see another join the ranks.

Not many of the sponsors are active on here. There are a few active employees/owners that are.

I think your best bet is to ask questions in the general sections you will usually get a response.

Very nice Miami! Im a big believer in over stocking (compared to traditional discus methods) a discus tank with good filtration and consistent water changes.

Here are some of my Stendkers from around 6 years ago, I still have a few, although they are really gettin on in years now!

I agree, the discus bug hasnt caught on big in Ireland for some reason, great to see a a few interested in them.

Once again, thx for the welcome and sorry again for the rant last night. :hammer:

Well if you want to arrange a meetup in Galway in the future I may take the girlfriend for a weekend in the area and meet you guys. Just have to wait on the girlfriend to be back in Dublin (may take a few days/weeks).
And if you want to meet up in Dublin my place is open anytime (with a little heads up).
cheers
