Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi everyone

I'm new to the site and have been keeping African cichlids for about 18 months. I've just finished cleaning out my main tank, a 450ltr 5 footer and I'm moving away from the africans.
I'm setting it up now as a planted tank with a fire extinguiser for a co2 system with solinide, needle valve, ect., a hood I've just bought with 2 125w metal halides, 2 54w t5 tubes and moonlight LEDs. The substrate is black glass sand over a layer of Tropica soil. The filter is a fluval FX5 and I've 2 heaters that I'm looking for ideas to hide.
I plan to plant heavily in the back corners and lower it out into a mini rocky plain fully planted with glosso. The fish I'm planning on getting are; 60 cardinals, 10 otos, 4 bristlenose catfish, some Amano shrimp and about 5-7 discus(thinking of red melons but never seen one in the flesh). If all that is ok, I might add some hatchets or a couple of rams.

I'm a bit nervous about keeping discus, you hear how hard they can be but I'm excited about trying them. I know the lighting might be a bit high for discus but other than that could some of the more experienced members offer me any advice?????????????????????

Welcome aboard Pauly.
Sounds like a damn nice set up you're going to have there.A possible idea for hiding the heaters is a wall of java or similar moss?,as long as it didnt impede the circulation of heated water.I think a shoal of hatchets would look very good above the discus, and the cardinals a far better choice than neons imo.
I have about 3 10kg(?)CO2 extinguishers lying in shed, must put them up for offer at some stage.
Good luck with the new project and keep us updated, preferably with lots of pics.

Thanks! I'm a bit nervous of using java moss though, heard it can get out of control? I'm thinking of cable tying some bog wood together to make a wall in the corner of the tank with the filter output directly above the heaters.

From the little I know of properly set up planted tanks, especially with CO2,you will be kept busy trimming most of the plants.
It does tend to 'take off',but not hard to keep under control.
Have you seen this, absolutely BL**DY amazing!!!
