Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Guys,
I'm going to be getting a Jewel Vision 450l tank in the next few weeks. I want to do it right as it means a lot to me so I wanted to put a 3d background in the tank, my opinion is they definatley beat a poster. Until I saw the cost so I goggled and found a few links about making a homemade background from Styrofoam....sounds like a good idea as I can have it exactly as i want it and create a large cave for the fish.

Some of the links i have seen have turned out fantasic.

What I want to know is has anyone tried it? If so any tips?

Cheers
Ross

Hi Ross,
its simple really get your styrofoam and cut it to your own design, this is messy and time consuming so dont rush it, and pray your other half is understanding as it gets everywhere... you can do it as i did carving each piece individually (this allowed me to create caves behind the rock too) or carve straight into your main block of styrofoam... once i had carved enough pieces i simply cleaned the tank wall with a nail brush and hand hot water to make sure it was 100% clean, rinsed a few times and dried it with paper towels, do a dry run here at placing your background, its easier than trying it with glue on the background.... here comes the messy bit ;) i heavily applied silicone to each piece and stuck them in place according to my plan, then the boring bit waited 3 days for it to cure, once cured i then liberally applied my sandstone coloured pond paint and sprinkled a little washed and drained playsand on it when it got tacky, i waited till this was nearly dry and added another coat and later a 3rd coat, then i simply had to wait for it all to cure proprly which took approx 1 week, i then did two fills and drains to make sure all was cured and clean out residue and believe me there is always some residue and volia tank done.

pond paint i got was on ebay
cgi.ebay.ie/POND-PAINT-WATERPROOFER-SEAL...?hash=item2c4b7814df

some would use a resin to further harden and seal it, i decided not to on this occassion and even being in a tank full of malawis it is stll perfect

have fun and be creative
